how to get dog to play?

how to get dog to play?

my GP (7yo), Patsy, is a rescue. i don't know much about her childhood, but her previous owner was disabled. i imagine she didn't get to play or get much stimulation in their home. we also think she was raised around cats.

since we got her, she has never played with us. we found out she plays with cats though. so we got a cat named Lyric to play with her, and they love each other and play together a bit. we limit how much Patsy chases Lyric though, as to not stress Lyric out. it would be nice to teach Patsy to play with us so we don't always have to rely on Lyric to get Patsy to have something to do.

Patsy doesn't really like squeaky toys or chasing us. we try to hype her up and act like prey but it doesn't work. she'll wag her tail and stuff, but she kind of just stares at us and follows us. she has to stay on a leash outside or she'll run away. she's also reactive to dogs, so getting a dog friend is not an option.

i wanna give my girl her best life because i know she's getting a little old now. her hips are not good and she's struggling getting up stairs. it saddens me to know that she probably never had a playful life and she was probably so stressed and probably still is. she just had surgery and she is in recovery, but when she heals up and it gets a bit cooler in the falltime, i'll probably head outside with Patsy and see if she'll play with me :3

they're starting to like each other

our GP, Patsy, is dog reactive. she never plays with us and it makes me sad. however, she really likes cats. so we adopted a playful kitty named lyric. they were very anxious at first, but now they chase each other around the apartment. it makes me happy that these two are getting along :3

my dog has cancer

the vets found a non cancerous mast cell tumor on her leg and she had surgery for it about a month ago. two days ago, we brought her to the vet to get the last of her stitches out, which is when we brought up that she had a weird bump on her tummy. it was this fluid-filled pimple thing with a hard pebble inside. we had the vet test it and we just got the news yesterday that she has cancer. she also has another mast cell tumor. i just dont know what to do and i don't have many friends so i just need to vent and ask for any advice from fellow GP owners.

the vets said they only saw some cancerous cells on the test slide because it was hard to get a sample of the growths. i don't know what to do or if she's in pain or if she could have even more cancerous growths on her. it's so hard to tell because she has so much fur, but i've been trying to rub her skin everywhere to see if i can find any more bumps.

sorry if this post is everywhere. i'm just trying to get by since i've heard the news. i'm already stressed from other things. pls give any advice to make patsy's life a bit more comfortable while she's in recovery of her surgery/preparing for this next surgery.

donut

guess who had a mass cell tumor removal!! also, guess who keeps licking the wound!! PATSY!! she has a lick sleeve on but she just licks the lick sleeve and it rubs against the wound. the vet said it's starting to ooze so we had to get a donut for her. i make her wear it when my partner and i are sleeping because she tends to lick it while we're asleep.
last picture was patsy post-surgery still sleepy from the anesthesia

Using E Collars? What do you recommend?

My partner and I have a 6yo GP named Patsy. We're looking to use an e collar to help with her barking and pulling while on walks. She is a very reactive dog and tries to lunge at other dogs. So far we've tried to use positive reinforcement and reward her with a favorite treat if she doesn't react to other dogs. However, this doesn't really work for her. I don't think she understands that being neutral to other dogs=treat. So my partner and I want to switch to positive punishment by using tools to dissuade her reactions by making her uncomfortable.

I would love to use a gentle leader, but the ones I've seen look like they're either too small, or she'll still decide to lunge at other dogs and possibly hurt herself. With the e collars, I worry that she will just pull it off like she does with her normal collars. She also has a LOT of fur on her scruff/neck area. I don't even know if the vibration of the e collars is going to do anything for her. I am also worried about the ethics of using tools like these on dogs. I never want to use the shocking function on her or have the e collar malfunction or something (IDK am I overreacting lol).

Don't worry, we are going to hire a private trainer to help address the causes of her reactivity. It's caused by fear of my partner and I getting hurt by another dog.

Does anyone have any experience with using tools like gentle leaders and e collars to help with their dog's pulling and reactivity? Also, what products do you guys recommend?

moving!!

patsy is so incredibly nervous right now at the new apartment. she's been barking at every sound in the hallway. we're thinking of sound-proofing the apartment with foam because you can hear her even from outside. i feel bad for our neighbors...

she ate a taco and got sick

puppy and i walked together but i wasn't with my husband. we usually walk her together because she's quick, and it's also nice to keep an eye out for other dogs. as i threw away her poop bag, i guess she had picked up a taco or something on the ground (we were near a taco stand). i kept walking because i didn't notice her pick it up until i heard a crunch from her. i quickly grabbed her face to take it out but she had already swallowed it. i was worried but it was something small so i brushed it off. besides, the other times she ate food off of the sidewalk, she was usually fine. well, at 3am she pooped on the kitchen floor and barked to wake us up. then we went on a big walk to make sure she kept letting her body get rid of the toxins while husband was cleaning the kitchen. oh god then we had to wash her. she hated it sm. when we were done, she slept the whole entire day and was exhausted. we made sure to feed her some plain ass food and she has recovered now!! from now on, when i walk her without my husband with me, i'm keeping her on a shorter leash.

TLDR she ate a bit of onion, pooped on the floor, got a bath, and she's recovered now.

puppy fur hat

every time i brush her, i roll up the fur in a ball and put it on her head. her name is patsy but she thinks her name is puppy (they kinda sound similar)
