Trying Self-drilling screws on van metal - what am I doing wrong? FORD TRANSIT CONVERSION

Hoping someone can advise me on what im doing wrong - I put up all my furring strips mainly with rivet nuts and M6 bolts, and all that's left is this board. However, since there's no hole behind the drivers seat I'm attempting a self-drilling screw.

Saw on youtube that some people go this route with self tapping or self drilling screws but i can't get the metal to budge. I tried drilling into it with a drill bit and it wont go through more than the picture shows. maybe the metal is too thick?

I was planning to add 2-3 more self-drilling in other spots for support now I'm thinking against having to do this again. Any advice would help.
