Tempted to work permanently from a rented office or coworking space. Is that crazy?

I've been working remotely for 6 years, and I genuinely am more productive away from my work office with coworkers. But what I've found is that using my personal home office for work has resulted in me mentally associating my home office with work. I just don't want to be in there when not working, even when that's also the space for my hobbies. I've basically sacrificed a space in my home for work.

In my current apartment, the room I use for working is small, but I'm moving house soon, and I'm not sure if I want to continue to equally ruin my new hobby room in the new house with work feelings. Also, by using it as a home office, it will exclude the rest of the family from using the space.

There are some coworking spaces near my new house, 10 minutes walk away, and my employer will cover the costs for me. (At the moment, they cover my home internet bill). I think I can get a private room there under the company budget.

My primary concern is that a couple nights per week I have late meetings due to timezones, so I would still probably take those meetings at home. That, and the need to lug my laptop back and forth.

Would you take a "free" home office a 10 minute walk away from home?

Heat wave + 5.1.15 killed my UDM

I've been happily running a UDM for a home network since 2020. For the last year, I've kept it in a small storage cabinet (with an open front) in my living room.

Ever since the 5.1.15 release, I noticed CPU usage was on average much higher, and the fan was running more often (Better memory usage, though!). The management interface was frequently reporting unavailability ever since the .15 release.

With the recent heatwave (31° C with no aircon), it shut off today and doesn't want to come back on. I had a small fan blowing into the cabinet due to the heat, but I guess that wasn't enough. It's been unplugged and off for a few hours, and it still doesn't want to power back on.

gg little buddy

Now I'm on the market for a new device. I'm considering the UDR 7, but I'm considering some of the prosumer brands, too. The pill shape is pretty ideal for my space needs.

I'm in the process of de-Googling my digital life. I'll be switching to a Fairphone with /e/os (deGoogled Android) soon. Relay is the only app I subscribe to on Google Play.

Is there an alternative way to get access to the paid tier besides Google Play? I can probably continue using it on my new device by using Micro-G, but if I could pay DBrady without Google getting a cut, that would be nice

▲ 98 r/Backup+1 crossposts

I have been a customer of IDrive for over 5 years to backup my home computer and home hobby systems. Naturally, my data needs have grown, and I now have a subscription for 10TB of storage. I use IDrive for cold backups, so I still have many copies of my data elsewhere, but IDrive has always been my backup of last resort.

Or so I thought.

In early April, I started receiving backup failure notices from one of my hosts running IDrive. My client installation had become broken, and I reached out to IDrive support to resolve the client install error, and they were very helpful.

At the same time, I noticed when using their web interface, it says my Account was undergoing maintenance, and that I couldn’t access my backup data. In my support ticket, I inquire, and they never return my inquiry.

Some weeks pass, and I realize I never set my backups to run – and I notice I still can’t access my backup data. I can login to my account, but when I enter my encryption key to access my data, it says the encryption key is invalid.

I know my encryption key. It hasn’t changed since my account was created, and it’s documented in the notes of my password vault. Furthermore, I use it for setting up my IDrive client – and it works! Showing no devices backed up on my account.

My storage totals still show 8.3TB/10TB in use, so my data isn’t lost, right? When my new backup starts, however, my data utilization starts again at 0TB and grows as my backup does.

I contacted support again. They say they’re looking into it. A week later, no response. It appears my data has been lost to the ether. I have now been nearly 1 month without access to my backup data. Repeated contact with support results in "backend engineers are looking into it."

I’m assuming the data is entirely lost. No actual loss, luckily. I’ll update if this ever gets resolved.
