Nolan is criticizing fundamentalism and valourizing a centrist conservatism and it’s timely.

Two poles that keep tension in this film, and in Homer’s original, give this film its sense of inevitability: one always looks for a way home and yet we can never return to our youth. The first is a persistent ideal and the second is persistently real (and confusing the real and the ideal never goes unpunished, or so Goethe tells us).

Apply that same lens to the world around us and we see the futility of movements like MAGA, and also their inevitability.

I’m not saying America is Ithaca, but the world is definitely seeing some Ithaca moments these days.
