Suggestions for Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and the eastern Dakotas
Hi all,
My wife and I are flying into Minneapolis in early June, renting a car, and doing a week-long roadtrip through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and the eastern half the of Dakotas. The primary objective of the trip was to get me to Iowa and her to Iowa and North Dakota in a meandering quest to all 50 states.
We enjoy driving together, natural history, geology, art, craft beer, books, kitsch, and just plain weird stuff. On prior trips we’d come up with a few things to see and provide structure to the trip, and then we’d adapt to whatever we found and end up where we ended up each day.
A couple of planned things on the trip are The House on the Rock and Witches Gulch in Wisconsin. Plan on going through Fargo and visiting the headwaters of the Mississippi near Bemidji.
The western end of the trip is more open, if we do more in the eastern side, we’ll cut out the drive to Pierre and Bismarck.
Any suggestions for fun/interesting things to see and do in this area? Any standard warnings, such as mosquitoes the size of small birds that are hungrier than a vampire after two centuries in the ground?
EDIT: If you’ve got any suggestions for great places to get pie, drop a line. My wife loves pie and doesn’t think it is at all unreasonable to get a hundred miles out of the way for a good piece of pie.
