Are roach-free buildings way more expensive?
I have extreme trauma from my childhood, and roaches are a trigger i cant get over yet. I grew up in poverty and whenever we had roaches, nobody did anything about it. Now, when I see one I get flashbacks and feel trapped and/or like im going to be sucked back into that world of poverty, abuse, addiction, violence etc. with nobody to help me.
HOWEVER I need to move to a city. I live in the Hudson valley, have all my life—but it keeps getting more expensive with less and less job opportunities. I have a BS in computer science, and I need to move to a city if I want realistic job opportunities. I looked into Philly but there's apparently a roach problem there too. When I go to the city, I've seen roaches in the street or at subway stations and I freak out a bit, but I get over it because It's in the street. But then when I go back to my hotel room I'll be hypervigilant, paranoid, and on edge worrying there will be a roach in my hotel room.
I know I have to get over it, and I've been doing a lot of CBT and EMDR, but im definitely not ready for EMDR that focuses on roaches. At all.
However I have to move to a city for job opportunities. I've heard that newer building & buildings with a doorman will tend to have less roaches, but I can imagine they'll be a lot more expensive. I guess I'm asking how reasonable it is to try to live somewhere roach free. And if you all have any tips?
