Two Ruffed Grouse emerging from their snow roosts on a cold January morning
Captured this moment of two Ruffed Grouse emerging from their overnight snow roosts right in front of one of my cameras.
The grouse in the front flies away, the one in the back stays inside with its head poking out.
The night before, this camera captured footage of them digging their roosts, but missed the vital moment of them diving into the snow. You can only really see their heads poke out as they dig in the snow. Not nearly as dramatic as this footage of the one flying away.
Ruffed Grouse dive into snow when it's deep and fluffy enough on cold nights then dig a small insulated chamber called a snow roost in which to sleep in, emerging in the morning.
Captured in Thunder Bay District, Northwestern Ontario, Canada
