So I’ve seen different YouTube videos, mainly Japanese places where I’ve seen different methods of prepping the coals. One method, they heated up the Binchotan and laid the hot coal in the grill first then placed the unheated coals on top. The other method was exactly the opposite, where the unheated coals were first then the hot coals were placed on top.

Which method is best to prevent flare ups?
