Title: Astronomy Lab (ABC Knockoff) | A Cozy Mars Colony Book Nook

Title: Astronomy Lab (ABC Knockoff) | A Cozy Mars Colony Book Nook

Picked up another anonymous ABC kit, this time the Astronomy Lab. I wasn't crazy about the official name at first, but after building it I started thinking of it less as a lab and more as a bedroom or study a couple of generations after the first settlers arrived on Mars.

It's not a heroic "first footsteps on the red planet" scene. It's just...home. Books on the shelves, a telescope by the window, and Mars is simply what's outside.

The build itself was pleasantly straightforward. Nothing especially fiddly or frustrating, and everything fit together well. The only real gripe was the wire management. It gets a little chaotic behind the scenes, but the industrial sci-fi aesthetic actually disguises it pretty well, so I never felt the need to fight it.

The warm lighting and the backlit porthole are definitely the stars of the show. Once it's illuminated, it really sells the feeling of a lived-in space rather than just another futuristic room.

Overall, another solid ABC kit. If you're looking for something that's more grounded science fiction than flashy space opera, this one is worth a look.

Natural History Museum Book Nook (ABC Build) and last market update for a min!

This one was a quick build compared to some of the monsters I've been working through lately.

It's definitely on the cheesier side, and you can tell it's an ABC/third-party kit, but I have to admit the finished result grew on me. The little fossil displays and museum cases do a decent job selling the theme.

Ironically, the hardest part of the whole build was the dinosaur skeleton in the middle. Everything else flew together, but that skeleton was a tight fit and took way more fiddling than I expected.

Overall, not the most detailed museum I've ever seen, but it fills a niche I don't have many of in my collection: a tiny natural history museum complete with fossils and a centerpiece skeleton display.

So last market this past Friday was decent!

I only sold one nook Caramel Dream, but considering the turnout still alternating between heat death of the universe and torrential downpour, I'm gonna call it a success!

We're gonna skip July and maybe August. Even night markets are getting unbearably hot in Orlando haha. Still selling on Marketplace, but overall a really good experiment!

Kasuga Grocery store!

Finished this little Japanese corner grocery store.

For an ABC build, I was genuinely impressed by the amount of detail packed into it. The storefront is loaded with groceries, magazines, a vending machine, and tons of tiny products that make it feel like a real neighborhood shop.

Stylistically, it reminds me a lot of Cutebee's neighborhood storefronts. The biggest difference is the scale. This one is tiny. The detail density is impressive for its footprint, but I did notice during transport that some of the little exterior decorations are prone to working themselves loose. Nothing major, just something to be aware of if you plan on moving it around often.

The build itself was pretty smooth too. My only issue was forgetting to install a couple roof supports before moving on to the exterior, which was entirely my own fault. 😅

Once the lights came on, it ended up having a lot more atmosphere than I expected.

Always nice when a smaller kit surprises you.

Magic spell library! And quick Market update

Finished the Magic Spell Library by Dolphin Island and I'm honestly impressed with the final result.

Quick market update since a few people asked on my last post: my sister and I finally had a much better night at the market. We got rained out near the end, but still managed to sell four book nooks (Photography Studio, Dark Mystery Case, Golden Section Line, and Ancient Bar), so I'm calling that a win even if we left slightly waterlogged. We're still tweaking the booth setup, but it's definitely moving in the right direction.

Back to the build.

The standout feature is the hidden front facade. The cathedral doors open to reveal the library behind them, and the Pepper's Ghost flame effect works much better than I expected from the promotional photos. It's one of those effects that doesn't really come across in still images but looks fantastic in motion.

The hardest part of the build was definitely the braziers. The instructions showed six triangular mounting positions, but the parts only provided five slots. It wanted three chains per brazier, but using the configuration shown in the diagram would have left everything sitting crooked. I ended up using four attachment points instead, which gave a much cleaner result.

My only real criticism is the wall assembly. A lot of the construction relies on slotting wall sections together, but several joints never felt like they seated completely. Even following the instructions exactly, there was quite a bit of adjustment and persuasion involved, and a few connections still feel looser than I'd like. I never quite got the fit as tight as I wanted.

That said, the final effect is worth it. Between the opening facade, deep library interior, and animated flames, this one feels more like a display piece than a typical book nook. The hidden library reveal gets me every time I open the doors.

Johns Hair Salon!

Finished this little barber shop from Cutebee. ✂️

This one ended up being a pleasant surprise. The product photos made it look fairly simple, but the finished build has a lot of character packed into a small space. Between the barber chairs, waiting area, shelves, and warm lighting, it really comes together nicely once assembled.

My only real complaint is one absolutely baffling design choice.

One of the exterior wall panels literally says "Your tagline here."

Not a fictional business name. Not a blank sign. Not a customization option.

Just... "Your Tagline here." 😂

I genuinely thought it was some sort of temporary placeholder and kept waiting for a later step to replace it. Nope. That's the final wall panel.

Other than that weird little detail, it was a fun and straightforward build that ended up looking much better than the listing photos.

Vintage mechanic shop!

Mechanic Shop 🔧

Finished this mechanic shop a while back, but today was the important part. I finally got to give it to my stepdad.

This one was always meant for him.

The build itself had a few memorable moments. The car in the foreground was easily the hardest part of the kit. The instructions stopped being helpful at a certain point, so I ended up trimming tabs, reverse engineering sections, and convincing the pieces to fit through sheer stubbornness.

My favorite detail is still the engine hanging from the chain hoist. It's such a small thing, but it instantly makes the workshop feel alive.

In the end, though, the build isn't really what I'll remember. Seeing the smile when I handed it over was the best part.

Sometimes the forever home is the most satisfying step of the project. 🔧

Sweet Chapter!

The dark storefront and warm lighting give this one a very different feel from the brighter bakery kits. Once the display cases, shelves, and window displays were stocked, it started feeling like a real little chocolate shop.

Build quality was surprisingly decent for an ABC kit. The tabs fit much better than the last one I worked on, though the acrylic shelves were still the usual balancing act. Thankfully I'd rather have those a little loose than risk cracking them.

The biggest time sink was all the tiny chocolates and pastries. The finished displays were worth it, but there were moments where I felt like I was personally stocking inventory for a shop that would never open.

Overall, a fun build and a nice change of pace from libraries and fantasy-themed kits.

The Alley Waiting for the Cat

Rofuntime kit featuring a narrow Japanese alley with layered storefronts, overhead signage, integrated lighting, and an angled mirror at the end of the street.

The depth on this one was the biggest surprise. Most of the structure is built from relatively shallow components, but the overhangs, balconies, hanging signs, cherry blossom canopy, and mirrored terminus create a convincing sense of distance once assembled. I'm always a sucker for builds that use mirrors this way. The "street continues beyond the scene" effect never gets old.

Edges painted and selective details enhanced with dimensional glue.

Overall a straightforward build that photographs much better finished than it does on the box.

Wish me luck at the market tomorrow! Last week's event got rained out, so hopefully the weather cooperates this time.

Dark Mystery Box (???)

Dark Mystery Case? (Idk it has like 5 different names. ABC BUILDS whatcha gonna do)

This one turned out to have a lot more going on than I expected from the box art. The finished scene includes a hidden door mechanism, a spinning chandelier, and a built-in music box, which gives the detective office a lot of personality once everything is assembled.

The build itself was fairly straightforward, but there were plenty of small details packed into the room. Books, files, clues, wall decorations, and cats seem to be tucked into every available corner.

The hidden door is probably my favorite feature. It's easy to miss at first glance, which feels exactly right for a mystery-themed kit.

The Realm of the Magical Book!

Finished up The Realm of the Magic Book, an ABC build with a surprisingly nice magical library theme.

This one was almost suspiciously easy. Forty steps, very little fiddly assembly, and I spent more time waiting for glue to dry than actually building. The floating books and portal mirror do a lot to sell the illusion, though.

Not the most detailed build I've worked on lately, but it makes for a cozy little fantasy nook once the lights come on. 📚✨🔮

Sweet House

This one ended up winning me over.

The product photos didn't really do much for me, but seeing the storefront come together completely changed my mind. The lit windows, bakery displays, and little details give it a lot more charm in person.

As with a lot of ABC kits, there were a few quality control issues. Some of the laser-cut paper pieces weren't fully cut through, and the tabs were loose enough that I started putting B7000 in the slots before assembly.

Otherwise it was a pretty straightforward build. Bonus points for the sleepy shop cat in the window and the tiny dog outside.

Cat Affairs Bureau 🐈‍⬛📁

The concept is surprisingly unusual. The front houses the bureau itself, complete with a balcony office, waiting area, bookshelves, desk, and chandelier. Turn it around and the rear opens into a flower-covered cottage connected through the same structure. It feels less like a room with a back wall and more like two separate scenes sharing the same footprint.

The only other double-sided book nook I've built was Monster Carnival, which is still lying broken after an unfortunate 3-4 foot drop, so this isn't a format I come across often.

My favorite detail ended up being the side panel. The layered tree silhouette is backlit by the interior lighting, creating a shadowbox effect when viewed from the side that isn't obvious from the product photos.

The lighting is also doing a lot here. Warm interior illumination contrasts with cool blue exterior accent lights, and the entire mood shifts once it's powered on.

No market this week unfortunately. We got rained out. Looking forward to seeing how this one, Caramel Dream, and a few of the other recent builds do when they finally get in front of buyers.

Sakura Noren Sake House 🍶

ABC build and absolutely a Cutebee knockoff. Having built quite a few of the actual Cutebee kits, I'd pick the real thing over this one in a heartbeat. The engineering and fit just aren't on the same level.

That said, this one wasn't too bad for what it is. The pieces were so loose early on that I thought I was in for trouble, then the walls went up and suddenly everything fit like a bank vault. Getting some of the wall angles lined up was a bit of a fight, but the tradeoff is that the finished structure feels incredibly solid.

Love the cat bartender, the sliding window, and all the little details packed into such a small footprint.

Caramel Dream Cat cafe from...Joincon?!

This one ended up being a giant cat scavenger hunt. The final count came to 20 cats hidden throughout the café, including the stairs, balcony, wheel, cubbies, and café floor.

The revolving wall and spinning cat exercise wheel were nice touches, but the lighting is what really sold the finished piece. A lot of the upper-floor details didn't fully come together until everything was lit up.

One thing I found interesting was realizing this was a Joincon kit. I'd seen the name before, but always assumed they were mostly a reseller. This is the first build I've had where the manual clearly identified it as Joincon from the start.

The Ancient Library

Started this one expecting a simple library and ended up with a much larger build than I anticipated.

It has two floors, a winding staircase, upper gallery, detailed wall panels, and even a small gear-driven feature hidden in one of the walls. The books were all assembled in the very first step, which should have been my warning that this wasn't going to be a quick project. By the time I was done, I'd folded and shelved well over 100 tiny books before the structure was even finished.

The staircase was probably the biggest challenge. The fit on the parts was extremely tight throughout the build. Frustrating in the moment, but it gave the finished structure a really solid feel.

My favorite surprise was how much depth the design has. Every time I thought I understood the layout, another shelf, balcony, window, or architectural detail appeared. Once the roof and front frame went on, it stopped feeling like a room and started feeling like an actual building.

Owl House!

absolutely flew through this one, which probably says more about me than the kit. An owl-themed bookstore with stained glass, potion bottles, a balcony study, and wall-to-wall books was basically engineered to hit every one of my interests.

Overall, I thought the finished result was stronger than the build itself. The structure is fairly straightforward, but once the lamp post, roof details, lighting, and exterior elements are added, it really comes together into a charming little fantasy bookstore.

The biggest downside was the construction quality. A lot of the parts felt pretty flimsy, and there were a few instruction steps where I spent more time figuring out what the designer intended than actually assembling the piece. Nothing impossible, just the usual third-party "interpretive instructions" experience.

That said, I really liked the mix of printed shelves and individually assembled books. It gave the shop a much more lived-in feel without turning the build into a marathon of folding tiny books.

Definitely one of the cozier builds I've done recently, and probably one of the easiest ways to get me to ignore my backlog and start building immediately. 🦉📚✨

The Ancient Bar!

ABC build and a fairly easy finish overall. The structure is very close to Dwarf House, enough that I'd guess they came from the same design family.

No major fit issues, no nightmare wiring, and nothing that made me want to launch a wall across the room.

I only did a little edge painting on this one, mostly silver and gold. In hindsight that was probably the right call because the LEDs are extremely warm and already push the whole build toward a cozy tavern look.

The biggest strength is the vertical design. The balcony level overlooking the tavern below gives it a lot more depth than the kit photos suggest. 🍺✨

Photography studio (little market update)

Photography Studio is complete. 📸

This was another ABC build, and the product photos honestly didn't do it many favors. I expected something much more cartoonish, but the finished kit ended up feeling like a real vintage photography studio with a surprising amount of depth.

The staircase was easily the hardest part of the build. Getting everything lined up between the floors, balcony, and walls took far more patience than I expected. Once that was in place, though, the rest of the structure came together smoothly.

Really happy with how this one turned out.

Bonus photo at the end is my booth setup from the first night market of the month. It was actually the first market where I didn't sell a single book nook, which was definitely a new experience after more than 40 sales. That said, I had a lot of people stop by, picked up some new followers, and got plenty of interest and questions about the builds.

One down, three markets to go. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of June plays out.

Warmglow Coffee Shop And bonus collection shot!

This was another ABC kit and a surprisingly relaxing build. The instructions were clear, the fit was good, and most of the work went into the usual finishing touches: edge painting, weathering, and trying to make everything feel a little less like laser-cut MDF.

The doors were probably the trickiest part, but that's less a criticism of this kit and more a universal law of miniature building. Tiny doors seem determined to fight me regardless of who designed them.

The biggest strength here is definitely the storefront. A lot of coffee shop kits focus on packing detail into the interior, but this one puts just as much effort into the exterior architecture. The layered entrance, dark wood tones, and warm lighting give it a lot of shelf presence even before you start peeking inside.

Overall: beginner-friendly, attractive final result, and one I'd happily recommend to someone looking for a cozy storefront build.

Bonus: Included a photo of the collection I've built up so far. Sweet House and Twilight Bookstore won't be making it to tonight's market. I sent the shelf photo to one of my regulars for first dibs and she immediately claimed both of them. 😄

Wish me luck tonight! 🌙📚☕️

Butterfly Collection Room finished! 🦋

This ABC build turned out to be a really fun one. The two-story layout gives it a ton of depth, and every surface is packed with books, furniture, curiosities, and of course... butterflies.

The butterflies themselves were probably the most tedious part of the whole build. There are so many of them. 😅

On the flip side, all of the edge painting was surprisingly satisfying. Between the dark woods, reds, golds, and little accents throughout the room, it was one of those kits where painting the pieces really helped everything come together.

Definitely one of those builds that rewards taking a second look because there's always another detail hiding somewhere.
