Would you support a "Curated Collective" startup taking over a massive space in a desolate local mall?
Hey MA,
I’m a young entrepreneur currently looking at a 2,200+ sq ft space in a local mall that has been pretty desolate/quiet for the last few years. I have the chance to sign a lease today, but I wanted to check the pulse of the community first.
My vision is Origin. It’s not just a store; it’s a "Third Space" designed to bring life back to a mall wing that people have forgotten about.
Here’s the breakdown: • The Vibe: High-end Designer, Y2K, and Millennial "Buy-Sell-Trade" (Think Buffalo Exchange meets a high-end gallery). Monochromatic aesthetic. • The Collective: I’m dedicating half the floor space to 10 local artists, reworked-clothing designers, and small business owners to host their own racks and wall galleries. • The Mission: I hope to create 10 - 15 new jobs specifically geared toward youth/young adults (ages 16–25) to give them a space to lead and grow in a creative environment.
I’m tired of seeing malls filled with the same five corporate stores. I want to build a destination where you can find one-of-a-kind pieces and support local creators in one spot.
I’m trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on this by 4 PM today.
- Would you actually drive to a "quiet" mall to shop a curated collective like this?
- Does the idea of a "Buy-Sell-Trade" model for designer/Y2K gear appeal to you more than traditional retail?
- What’s one thing you feel is missing from the shopping experience in MA right now?
I’m not naming the mall yet, but if you’re from the area, you can probably guess.
Would love your honest thoughts!
