I’ll be staying about 20–30 minutes from Dundonald, Prestwick, Troon, and the other major courses in Ayrshire during a trip this September, and I’d love to get in one round while I’m there.

I’m around a 20-handicap golfer, so I’m wondering whether it’s worth splurging on somewhere like Prestwick, Royal Troon, or Turnberry even though I’m not a particularly good player. Would I still have a great experience, or would I be better off playing a more affordable or forgiving course?

I’ve also heard a lot of good things about Dundonald, so that’s definitely on my list as well.

If you only had one round to play in the area, what would you recommend? I’ll most likely be playing on a weekday if that makes any difference.
