NGD D-41 Custom Shop Cocobolo

Bought sight unseens this brand new D-41 with Cocobolo back and sides and premium spruce top.

My only dread. Definitely a loud guitar! Cocobolo really provides some clarity and note definition. Still need to try it with 12s after I play around a little with the factory 13s. Haven’t decided yet.

The Cocobolo is very red and beautiful! 😍

NGD 2016 00-42SC

Wow. This guitar arrived and has changed my perspective on (guitar) life!

It sounds incredible, clear, full, piano like and loud. I was looking at a 0012-28MD at local store and decided to pull the trigger sight unseen on the 00-42SC.

When it arrived from CME I could feel the binding when passing my nail over it where it joins the body. Since I had a 3 day return policy I quickly took it to my friends at Gryphon Stringed Inst, to get an opinion. Turns out the binding has been repaired previously and there is a probability it might come off again, tough to tell.

But the decision to keep it was simple; I A/B compared it to the 0012-28 in the store. I was shocked how my guitar just made the 0012-28 sound thin and tiny. It amazed me because I played that exact 0012-28 many times and loved it. There is just something special with this 00-42SC. If binding issues happen again I can repair, the store luthier (who fixed hundreds of Martin bindings) told me to keep it as the repair looked well done.

The same happened at home. Guitars like my D-28 and my 2025 OM-28 just sound small and thin if I play finger style on them right after I play this guitar.

I wonder what makes it so special? The hide glue? The Cocobolo, the age? Craftsmanship? I am just amazed and very happy. If I ever discover why I will get an OM with the spec hehehe.
