What role does French play in modern-day Haiti?
Hello! I want to preface that I know that French and Haitian Creole are both official languages in Haiti. However, it is to my understanding that outside of very formal settings, Haitian Creole is the default national language. With that being said, I’ve come across some tiktoks of Haitians that almost exclusively speak French or English in their videos. So, that made me wonder:
- How often is French spoken in casual settings
(
- i.e among friends or family)
- How is French or people that prefer French perceived by the average Haitian?
- Are there Haitians that are unable to speak Haitian creole?
Just really interested in language and also the politics of language in the Caribbean!
