Mate is a traditional drink from South America , more specifically Argentina and Uruguay. It's bitter+hot and while some people drink mate all throughout the day it can also be part of a social activity. You pour hot water on the yerba mate and drink through a special metal straw called bombilla.

Mate cocido and tereré are both drinks also based on yerba mate, but they taste sweeter. Mate cocido is also a hot drink, while tereré is cold and originates from Paraguay.
