Was the blatant display of vibrant samoan/polynesian culture the source of so much Moana hate?

Most of the critics who talked shit about moana la are old white men with no culture. Most of the online moana live action haters are weak ugly white male deadenders living in their mama's garage. Again, zero culture.

I know alot of white people - males in particular - who get absolutely triggered by any proud display of indigenous culture. Cultural things they don't have. Especially displays of proud polynesian/samoan culture.

Moana movies are practically finished without dwayne johnson..

He is the only one with the persona, the clout and drive to bring these moana projects together.

He is also samoan. Which is perhaps the most authentic and intact polynesian culture today.

Samons also have some sway in hollywood with samoan producers and directors.

But reality is, no dwayne no more moana.

I'm quite happy if there'll be no more moana films the next 20 years..

If that's the kind of reception moana live action gets, then world doesn't deserve our beautiful polynesian culture.

Moana and seiuli dwayne johnson haters are funny..

They come here, talk absolute repetitive shit about the moana movie and dwayne. You respond to them and they get all mushy crybaby.

Demanding the moderators ban me from this MOANA forum. Duh.

Most of them haven't even seen the movie.

What a sad miserable lot.

Polynesia itself has its own rivalries. There is some dissent among the polynesian communities that moana is too samoan-centric..

Mesa Faasolo

As someone who is of both Tongan and Samoan heritage, sometimes it comes off as Moana being represented heavily by the Samoan culture only.

I get that majority of the cast and creators are also of Samoan heritage, but ‘Maui’ & ‘Moana’ were figures in all polynesian cultures. Not just Samoan.

Just my opinion, not looking for lessons/ novels or explanations. There just isn’t enough representation of other cultures.

Some people say moana is not representative of polynesian female. Well, here's the current samoa national netball team. And most of them look like moana.

Here's also a link to the samoa womens national rugby league team. Lots of moana look a-likes also.fetu samoa

After Momoa (46) and The Rock (54), who is the next polynesian actor to break out in hollywood?

Roman Reigns i reckon has very limited range and obviously wants to stay in his comfort zone (wwe). He also getting old (41).

At this point, i can't see any polynesian break out star any time soon.

Moana live action is polynesian representation. Polynesians - especially children - see themselves in moana film.

Alafou Ulukivailoa

We watched Moana as a family, and I got to watch something I’ll never forget. 🥺❤️‍🩹

From the very first scene, my daughter was on her feet, dancing along to every song like her body already knew the rhythm before her mind caught up. I realized why. This wasn’t just a movie to her. It was home.

She saw her grandmother’s wisdom and warmth in Gramma Tala. She saw her dad’s steady strength in Chief Tui. She saw her mother’s kind spirit in Tina. She saw her own fire, her stubbornness, and her big heart in Moana. The ocean, the drums, and the dancing weren’t just background music. It was her music. Every move she made along with Moana was her body recognizing itself in the story.

That’s what true representation does. It’s not just a character who looks like your kid. It’s a story where they can see their grandmother, their father, their culture, and their whole family reflected back at them. My daughter didn’t just watch Moana tonight. She danced her way into seeing that she belongs in this story, fully and completely.

Grateful beyond words for movies that do this for our children. 🌊🐓

After a week, moana stays ahead of minions and toys at box office..

Moana gonna have long long legs with its familiar storyline, catchy tunes and absence of kids/girls movies the next few months.

Wont be surprised if disney keeps it in theaters through xmas-new year holidays.

Noticed that moana animated and moana 2 is again most streamed movies this month. How much is that fueling moana live action legs at the cinemas.

Also notice they've added 600 screens for moana this weekend. A couple of thousand more than the odyssey OW.

Interesting.

Moana live action and the moana animated movies are a celebration of samoan and polynesian culture..

Where ever the moana la box office numbers end up at. It doesn't really matter to us.

Disney is a huge company. It can recover any losses overnight.

Us samoans and the polynesian communities have got what we want. And we are truly humbled to see our people and our culture in all its essence, celebrated across the globe.

3-way race: Minions, Toys 5 and Moana LA. Who will last?

Odyssey is Rated R, so will have little effect on junior market. Spidey will eat into minions and toys male audience.

As of right now. Minions seem front-loaded, Toys is running low on batteries (pun intended) and moana has its female crowd.

Moana's catchy tunes also should push her towards Thanksgiving.

Good moana holds so far this week btw.

Moana live action voyagers scene.

An ode to our polynesian common ancestor Tangaroa.

He led the voyages to most of the polynesian islands. He was Maui's father.

This scene could be the launch pad for a moana spinoff.

Moana Live Action OW picks up $11.5m in south East Asian markets - korea, phillipines, indonesia, taiwan, hong kong, malaysia, etc..with japan still to open.

I don't think disney manipulated the audience scores of A- and 90% on popcornmeter..

I think people who watched Moana LA genuinely enjoyed it

Especially parents and kids.

But if by any small chance disney 'influenced' part of the score, I don't blame them. Crusty old critics shit on their movie for kids and moana fans.

And at the same time heaping praise on boring sleepfest old people flicks like theinvite they like.

Disney knows how to play this game.

What are catherine laga'aia's post moana live actionprospects in hollywood?

Hollywood is not particularly kind to Polynesian actresses. Apart from the moana movies, Aulii, too, has been struggling to secure major roles. Just bits and pieces in b-grade movies, tv and stage.

Pros for Ms Laga'aia.

- pretty enough with acting skills. But then hollywood is not short of those.

Cons

- church and family-oriented means she'll be conservative and less selfish. 2 traits that wont help you in hollyweird.
