Meta, Amazon and Google donated the most to Trump's projects - explains why Big Tech received a $51 billion tax cut

A reminder of why we need to vote with our wallets, as these companies have rigged the system in their favour.

County with 37 data centers asks schools to ‘Conserve electricity’

Its officials said it expects a 25% rise in electricity costs next year, and advised workers to close the blinds and turn off their computers to make up for it.

We have to ask whether we need all the extra features on our products/tools that are pushing our processing needs to unsustainable levels.

Google's new reCAPTCHA wants your camera access and 21 points of your hand

I've encountered this in the wild and was able to refresh the page to get the standard one.

Don't let Google & companies get away with this. They need to see a heavy drop in conversion to force them to use alternatives.

If you own a website or contribute to one, then I would recommend:

The CEO of Mullvad is the main financer of the far-right Swedish Örebro party

Worth noting if you are using their VPN services or Browser.

EDIT:
Apparently, labelling them as far-right isn't as clear-cut from an economic perspective, but they do hold many core identity politics that are common amongst far-right parties such as:

  • Voiced support for the idea of large-scale remigration on multiple occasions, even for Swedish-born immigrants: "Sweden belongs to the Swedes"
  • Supports Sweden leaving NATO
  • In favor of Sweden leaving the European Union in a so-called "Swexit"
  • Stated that Sweden should only support other countries on the condition that it benefits Sweden and that it has to be "Sweden first"

The Richest Country Is Pretty Mid Now - A cautionary tale for everyone

Whether or not you agree with the nefarious conclusion in the video, it is useful to consider the influence of these mega-corporations and the tactics they employ to strip us of wealth, autonomy, and time.

It is told with America in mind, but certainly not limited to it.

Nearly 400 local newspapers sue OpenAI, Microsoft over alleged copyright theft

The lawsuit also alleges that OpenAI knowingly stripped copyright management information from publishers’ work - including author bylines, copyright notices, and terms of use information - in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

The complaint cites remarks by OpenAI founder Sam Altman, who acknowledged during testimony before the British House of Lords that it would be “impossible to train today’s leading AI models without using copyrighted materials.”

Record profits, terrible service: something’s got to give for US consumers.

With the consolidation of market power and competitors gone, companies can raise prices without improving customer satisfaction - paying more for less.

You can see this in the rise of fees from Uber to Amazon, where it is shown they are now on par with, or more expensive than, the traditional alternatives... except with minimal customer support.

This is why supporting alternatives is so important now, before it is too late.

Advice on an unusual situation - ILR with Global Talent

The usual advice is to provide 3-month payslips, bank statements and a letter from your employer confirming expertise - in my case "Digital Technology".

However, my situation:

  • Worked at a company the first 1.5 years
  • Exited, then started my own limited company (sole employee)
  • Clients that I offer consultancy services to, for my business, ended up all being non-UK-based

My current thinking for evidence:

  • 3X payslips from the first company
  • 3X bank statements during the period with the first company
  • 3X payslips from my own company
  • 3X bank statements, latest
  • A letter from my accountant validating these timings and confirming money was from expertise
  • Contract with my own limited company confirming money was from expertise
  • A letter from a key client (non-UK-based) confirming money was from expertise

The main question comes down to demonstrating expertise and whether my client's non-UK status is an issue. And if so, does my contract/accountant suffice?

I also offer unpaid advisory services to a UK company, and I could get them to write a letter.

Any feedback would be incredibly appreciated.

ILR: Timing on biometrics appointment

My visa expires on 1 June 2026, and so my application is due before then.

I plan to submit my application today, but one of my evidence documents might only be ready just after 1st June.

Is it fine to book your biometrics after the due date?

This is for SET(O) - Global Talent.
