I want to get into makeup

Hi, im 14 years old ive never really wore makeup because I always avoided changing myself because it can attract attention like teasing and stuff like that.. but I really want to start wearing it. I dont know where to start, every time I used to play with my mom's makeup I ended up looking like a clown so I assumed makeup wasnt for me.. maybe it isn't but I want to try.
