who wants a 2026 solo traveler trip report?

i went on a couple business trips to chicago recently and was able to explore the city solo a little bit in my off hours. here are my notes on what i loved and what i didn’t. anyone have any recs for other things i might enjoy on my next trip based on these? or just want to roast my choices in life?

things i absolutely loved:
- art institute
- frank lloyd wright home and studio
- driehaus
- chicago symphony orchestra
- grant park music festival
- quimby’s bookstore
- chinatown
- sailing on lake michigan

things that were cool but not top top tier:
- architecture center boat tour
- myopic books
- dorian’s

things that were letdowns:
- garfield park conservatory
- taste of chicago (disclaimer: not this year, went in a past year but figured i’d mention it since it’s coming up)
- chicago cultural center
- rosemont outlets

things that don’t need to be ranked. you just have to do them?
- riverwalk
- millennium park
- navy pier

2026 solo traveler trip report

i was in chicago a bunch recently on business after not having been for a while, and figured someone out there might appreciate my notes on solo dining in the city.

i’ve visited before as a tourist and hit a lot of the standards like deep dish, classic steakhouse, portillo’s, girl and the goat/duck duck goat, etc. hence why those are not represented in these notes.

here are places i loved and thought were world-class:
- akahoshi
- pretty cool ice cream
- le bouchon
- cellar door provisions
- paulo gelato
- 312 fish market
- legend dumpling
- hello jasmine
- cafe tola

here are places i thought were fine but wouldn’t return:
- boefhaus
- margie’s candies
- hing kee
- dongbei ren jia
- izakaya momotaro
- sicilian bakery
- longman & eagle
- mitsuwa

here are places i didn’t like and wish i hadn’t gone:
- saint anna bakery
- miko’s italian ice
- cafe beograd
- paulie gee’s
- do rite donuts
- big star

the one place out of all of them that felt awkward solo was le bouchon. i actually still went twice because i liked the food enough to power through, but i’d tell folks with social anxiety to avoid.

where can i find Emperor lychees?

i know where to find standard lychee varieties but i am on the hunt for this specific variety.

open to any location, city or burbs. open to markets selling whole fruit as well as restaurant preparations using them!

confirmed sightings only please!
