Is Pocketbook a good option for me?

I'm looking to buy my first ereader! I am based in the US. I would be purchasing from Amazon, but I'd otherwise like to stay away from the Amazon ecosystem if possible. I don't want to be tied to a monthly subscription and I don't want ads. I'm looking for an ereader that's bigger than a phone yet still comfortable to hold in one hand and take on the go. I'd like to be able to read in any light conditions. I could go either way on a color screen. Page turn buttons are a huge plus.

Currently I only read on Libby and I use multiple library cards, so Kobo doesn't seem like a good option for me. I'm open to other methods of ebook borrowing. I don't need any notetaking features. It would be cool to do the NYT crossword on an ereader, but it's definitely not a requirement.

Is a pocketbook a good fit for me? Edited to add: How did you choose between a verse or an era?
