For those unaware, hantavirus is a serious, often fatal disease caused by a family of viruses spread primarily by rodents (mice and rats). People contract it by breathing in virus particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, typically during cleaning or in infested areas. It causes severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory (HPS) or renal (HFRS) illnesses.
From the cruise ship episode, it might seem like this is being transmitted human-to-human.
