Shadows on my window
.
Outside my restroom window, a tree and a pole try to shield me from the world's most powerful floodlights that my neighbors seem to have acquired somehow! While this tree and pole superteam isn't entirely successful, they do create some rather cool shadows on the window. When I leave the restroom door open, turn on a small light in the attached room, and play with the camera settings, those shadows turn into this printmaking-esque aesthetic.
.
The dust on the window is, of course, intentional; for art 😁

The Gai Jatra festival in Bhaktapur is a huge, crowded event. There are thousands of people walking around the streets, and hundreds of participants and groups demonstrating music, dances, as well as traditional processions for their loved ones.
.
The participating crowd is made up of groups of people, such as this group of musicians, from different 'toles' and communities. People who not only share space but also language, history, and experiences. They come together and practice for a long time so that they may participate in festivals like this; not for money, but for joy, meaning, and culture. Not only does it foster kinship and community, but also ensures continuity of skill with the traditional art forms and culture itself.
.
A few of the young ones will continue in the group for a long time, and guide those who come later. Look at this group: a mix of the younger and older population playing together as equals, some comfortable - and skillfull - enough to light a smoke in the middle of their performance in the middle of one of the biggest festivals in the country!
.
This is how culture is passed down. Through thorough enjoyment and community fostering of everything that makes the culture whole; celebrated with all encompassing gusto and pride.

Under grayscale gloomy skies, I wasn't expecting much from this walk around Radnor Lake; my go to park during my time in Nashville. Had never seen this tree before, and couldn't find it during subsequent visits. But some combination of random turns and a fortunate zoning out of my zoned out mind led my gaze straight to this beautiful geometric branch.
.
The world is beautiful.
"Beautiful things don't ask for attention".
Sometimes - with enough luck - you stumble across them.
Sometimes - with even more luck - they pass through the filters of your perception, change the filter, the perception, and the perceiver.
.
Let go of the filter ✌️
