Changing sectors as an “executive”
My director level job at a medium (25 people) GC was eliminated. I was considered an “executive” but I was very hands on with my team, though not managing any of the projects myself. I have 10 years of experience in industrial construction management and industrial only. As I interview with other GCs, some of them are concerned that I only have industrial experience as they do various sectors like multifamily, schools, automotive, etc. On one hand, I think it is a valid concern, but on the other hand, I am not being interviewed as a PM or a super so I think it should be less of a concern than some potential employers make it out to be.
Does anyone have any thoughts or experience being in this situation? I do not want to be pigeonholed in industrial anymore and would like to be well rounded. Any talking points while interviewing with prospective employers?
