Coteacher thinks yelling at students is classroom management.

Has anyone else ever been in a situation where your class has a co teacher but that co teacher is actually so horrible to the children and does nothing but yell at them for doing normal things? These kids kept wanting to give me hugs or smile at me and she’d yell at them for it. I’m never going back there because I cannot handle that kind of energy, but those poor kids omg

Should I bring along a mock lesson to my elementary music ed interview?

So I am a new grad that finally landed my first interview! They agreed to conduct it virtually since i’m not in the area yet.

Ahead of the interview, I plan on sending in my resume (already sent in with my application but just so they have it) and I was thinking about using a past lesson plan from student teaching and formatting it in a way that could showcase the admin what kind of curriculum I could implement.

Has anyone else done this, or is it overkill? I’m assuming if I do this I should include some slide about student objectives and standards.

Has anyone gone into teaching from a completely different subject before switching to music?

First year music ed grad and the job prospects in my area are low. 5 jobs, applied to all but not selected to interview at any. It got me thinking about what I will do if I don’t get a music teaching job this year. Has anyone else started out in a school as a sub, TA or even full time teacher of a different subject before successfully transitioning into music ed? I worry if I pivot from music ed it’ll make it trickier to get a music ed job but at the same time I don’t want a job on my resume beforehand that isn’t education related.

There’s some deals for next week, and despite the snarkiness this may evoke from “real” teachers (which is BS btw), use your badge to get some free food!

If you don’t have one from your district, I heard there’s a badge template on Canva you can use. We deal with such crap, might as well reap some benefits from it!

Subbing high school today. There was a change to my last block class, I was told to fill in for someone who needed to leave ten minutes after last block started. So, I waited the ten minutes, went over, only to find a completely different teacher than the one listed for the classroom, informing me the teacher they put on my schedule has last block planning and wont need coverage.

After talking to the sub coordinator, I was placed at my original last block assignment, twenty minutes after it had already started. I walked in to find a class full of students and someone behind the teacher’s desk. They looked young, but I also look young, so I thought it might be a young sub or young teacher. I asked them directly if they needed sub coverage, because I had been asked to cover this class. They said no, along with others in the class.

Confused, I went back to the sub coordinator to tell her someone was already in the room. She called the room multiple times to no answer, then asked security to check on them who confirmed they had no teacher.

I went back and told the students off. I told them they had just lied to me, and that even though they were in high school they still need an adult in the room. I was honestly pissed because this kind of mixup can get me dismissed from this school that has been really good to me.

The students (of course) tried to claim they misheard me and that I had actually said “do you have a sub in here?” which is why they answered no. obviously, if I had asked that and they answered “no”, I wouldn’t have left, so that makes no sense.

Another student tried to throw in a last minute lie and say there was an old lady in there with them that just left. (Obviously not because I was just in the room with you five minutes ago) Add that up with ignoring the phone calls to the classroom and it’s clear that the scheduling mixup led to lack of/delayed coverage, and they tried to play it off like they didn’t need a sub because they liked having a class with no teacher.

I left a note explaining this to the teacher just to cover my ass. I’m taking a picture of this note and keeping the paper schedule they gave me today, that way they cannot claim it was my fault for not being there when class started.

What must have happened is when my coverage got switched, they never found someone for this class and just forgot, so when it worked out that my other coverage had planning, they just made me follow what was already put on my schedule at the beginning of the day.

I feel guilty for thinking the student behind the desk was a sub or teacher or TA, but i’m a young looking sub as well, and I didn’t want to insult them by saying “are you a student or the sub?” In my opinion, they shouldn’t have bee behind the teachers desk in the first place.

Based on everything i’ve said and done, could I still get in trouble for this? All I was doing was following the updated coverage they gave me, and it led to these kids being alone and lying about it.
