[Review] I got semi-permanent eyebrow art makeup at a clinic in Ginza, Tokyo — here's my honest experience
I've been lurking here for a while and wanted to share my experience getting art makeup (semi-permanent eyebrows) done in Tokyo.
**Why Japan instead of Korea?**
I looked into both. Korea is obviously the big name for cosmetic procedures, but a few things pushed me toward Tokyo:
- In Japan, ALL aesthetic procedures must be performed by a licensed physician. In Korea (and many other countries), nurses or technicians can do them. This was the deciding factor for me.
- Pricing was surprisingly similar. My eyebrow art makeup was ¥55,000 (~$365).
- I was already visiting Tokyo, so it made logistical sense.
**Finding a clinic**
This was the hardest part. When you Google "art makeup Tokyo" in English, you get almost nothing useful. Most clinic websites are Japanese-only. I eventually found a clinic in Ginza that had English-speaking staff through a lot of digging.
**The experience**
- Consultation was about 30 minutes. The doctor (yes, actual doctor) examined my skin, discussed the shape I wanted, and explained the process in English.
- The procedure took about 90 minutes.
- Pain level: maybe 3/10. They applied numbing cream beforehand.
- The staff spoke English throughout. Not perfect English, but more than enough to communicate clearly.
**Results**
- Day 1-3: Eyebrows looked darker than expected (normal, they told me)
- Day 5-7: Started to lighten and look more natural
- Day 14: Final result. Really happy with it. Very natural-looking.
- Now (several months later): Still looks great, minimal fading.
**What surprised me**
- The clinic was incredibly clean. Like, hospital-level clean. Way beyond any beauty salon I've been to.
- Zero pushy upselling. In fact, the doctor talked me OUT of an additional treatment she didn't think I needed.
- The conservative approach. They aim for natural results, not dramatic. If you want a bold Instagram-brow look, this might not be for you. If you want "my face but better," Tokyo is perfect.
**Cost breakdown**
- Eyebrow art makeup: ¥55,000 (~$365)
- Touch-up (included): Free within 3 months
- Consultation: Included
For reference, similar quality in Seoul ranges from ₩300,000-600,000 ($220-440), so pricing is comparable.
**Would I recommend getting beauty treatments in Tokyo?**
Absolutely, IF:
- You want a conservative, natural result
- You value having an actual MD perform the procedure
- You can find a clinic with English staff (this is the hard part)
I've since looked into other treatments available (Botox, HIFU, laser) and the pricing is competitive with Seoul for non-surgical procedures.
**Tips if you're considering it:**
Book at least a week before your trip — popular clinics fill up
Bring cash as backup, though most accept credit cards
The consultation is usually included in the price
Ask about downtime before booking — some treatments need 3-5 days of redness
Don't expect dramatic transformations — Japanese aesthetic medicine is all about subtle enhancement
