Big Joe: got some goodies from the Amazon delivery person today! New 5" wheels and new (dirt cheap) fire grate
I got this second-hand and the original wheels were well-rusted and the rubber tires were peeling off. The original cast iron fire grate was pretty nasty as well but would have lasted a lot longer- but I want more air-flow and am too cheap to buy a nice high-end fire basket, plus I don't really feel the need for one since I am able to quickly and easily clean the coals out the next morning anyhow.

The Weber cooking grate is $13.98 at Amazon and the Yoogaa 5" locking casters are $29.99 as of the time of this posting. Be forewarned- the way I used bricks to prop up the grill to install the wheels is NOT safe in any way, shape, or form. You could die, get injured, or injure any small kitten that is trying to help you as you work. Please be cautious and find a better way than I did.
I like how high the grill sits because the original wheels were approximately 3 1/2" so these large wheels get it up a bit higher. Plus I'd been using it without wheels so it was too low for my first five or six cooks. I'm maybe 5'11" and the main cooking grate now comes out at my navel. Seems like this will be awesome for flipping fiddly full racks of ribs or any other unwieldy cut of meat.
Jetlube SS30 is the copper-colored anti-sieze that I'm using on bolts and that is just so they come off if I need to take them off years from now and aren't all corroded in place. I hate when that happens.
The orange "tires" are not rubber. That might be good or might be bad- too early to know. I do know that rubber doesn't last because the original tires cracked and fell apart. These are some kind of hard plastic. They seem to have a little bit of give and I hope they are durable enough and the sun doesn't cause them to decay in short order.
I couldn't resist this rack of pork spare ribs but I don't know what I'm doing with my Big Joe yet
postimg.ccBig Joe (original) bottom vent is fiddly
Has anyone just drilled a small hole through the front (solid) cover, and put a stainless screw through that and the "screen" cover behind it so that they never have to deal with the screen at all anymore? I mean, most videos that I see just talk about leaving the botton vent open an inch or an inch and a half or two inches or whatever. The secondary screened aluminum plate sometimes binds and is just fiddly all the way around and I don't really see any purpose for it- but I'm new here.
Thoughts?
What is this thing that I got with my used Kamado Joe Big Joe
postimg.ccHow does this go together? If I have a fire in it when she gets home in two hours it might save me from a divorce!
