Ai filtering out age in applications

I know that AI is used a tonne to filter out applications before it even gets to a person these days.

I also read something recently that a bunch of companies are filtering out people over a certain age. (Specifically often women around my age. Yay.) I'm 40 and retraining in a different field, so the odds are already against me.

When I was younger I was always taught to put dates on everything, worked at XX from xxxx to xxxx, etc. And to put grad dates etc.

But now that I've heard how much AI is being used to scan applications and filter out which ones are 'worth' being read and shunting the rest to the don't bother to read pile, and especially if it's filtering people out based on apparent age and dates, how to you write your education and job history, to make it through the ai pre selection?

How to phrase cover letter

Hey!

This might be a bit of a weird one, but any advice on how to phrase this in a cover letter (or interview)?

Long story short

I started an apprenticeship as a dental tech.

I got fired (quite illegally and with no justification).

I found out the boss has been through at least 15 people in 2 years, with them either quitting or being fired.

I don't know how to talk about it in a cover letter or resume without making it sound like I quite, or got fired.

At the start it was great and they were fairly supportive of me being a newbie, liked that I asked questions, my eye for detail, the work I did etc.

I remember being kind of shocked how the boss spoke to one of the other technicians, but the technician didn't seem too phased. Then she took her tools home one day a few weeks later and texted to say she was never coming back.

Turns out in a lab of 5 - 6 people (3 - 4 technicians, 2 front office. 3 of which had been there for 25 years), they had a *really* high turn over in the other two positions, with people either quitting or being fired within weeks or months.

I got fired.

The general atmosphere towards me for the last 6 weeks got increasingly more hostile from the boss and the long term staff. Nothing I did was good enough. I was to slow. I asked to many questions. I cost her too much money (I got paid minimum apprentice wage 😅). Things I got complimented on a month before I was yelled at for now. You get the gist.

I know it wasn't a me issue. I've met a few people who have worked there or heard about the boss's reputation and learnt some things about the boss's history from other people. It still sucks though, and it really did a number on my confidence and self esteem.

I transferred my apprenticeship to full time study.

I did however learn a lot during the short time I was there and I think to a fairly high standard (although I am slow). I'm studying DT now and there is a definite difference between my work and how I move in the lab, compared to the other students.

I remembered the senior technician saying "if 100 people apply for a job and you were the only one who did an apprenticeship, you'll get the job" and I can absolutely see why.

My problem is, I don't know how to write it on a cover letter or in my resume, without making it sound like I: a) got fired. B) couldn't handle it and quit.

Or in an interview how to talk about it without just sounding like I'm bitter and slagging them off - while still making it clear that I began an apprenticeship and have worked in a lab and learnt a lot during that time.
