Fred Mertz Shows Concern for Ethel Just Once

Fred Mertz Shows Concern for Ethel Just Once

My question: besides the scene which I describe below, does Fred Mertz ever show genuine concern* for Ethel, before or since?

In “First Stop” episode of I Love Lucy, the foursome, after hours and hours in the car driving west towards California finally stop for the night at the ramshackle One Oak Cabins and Cafe in rural Ohio.

The scene where Fred shows concern: Ethel, preparing for bed, goes into the dilapidated cabin’s bathroom to brush her teeth, during which time a train rumbles by powerfully just outside, shivering and shaking the whole cabin. Fred then calls out: “Ethel, are you all right in there?” and the great sight gag is revealed as Ethel comes out in her pajamas, toothbrush and toothpaste tube in hand, sporting toothpaste squirted erratically all over her face. Very funny!

Can anyone think of any other time Fred showed Ethel concern? I can’t.

*P.S. I like how Fred got frisky and felt amorous towards Ethel on the high seas on the way by transatlantic liner to Europe, but his salt-air amorousness is very different from the actual concern he showed for her in the rundown Ohio cabin, an episode I love from start to finish
