Tips for refinishing antique light fixtures?

I have a few of these old fixtures in my house that I’m going to rewire and get cleaned up while the whole house is being rewired. I’m good on the rewire portion, but after cleaning the fixtures the finish is very uneven and worn. Any tips for how to brighten these up? I’ve read conflicting info on paint vs wax vs lacquer. The majority of the fixture is iron.

Warning about Southern Exposure Seed Exchange

I’ve previously ordered from SESE with no issues, other than lack of communication around shipping. This year I had several issues with the order I placed on 4/1.

All of my seed packets arrived ok. The only issue with the seeds was that two of the packets had very poor (<50%) germination- the cleome and the love in a mist.

My sweet potato slips had zero communication around expected ship date. When ordering, they stated early June for the beginning of the shipping window. I emailed on 5/26 to try to get a better date so I could make arrangements for someone to get the delivery if they arrived while I was on vacation- no response. I did get a shipping notice on 6/9 with an expected delivery date of 6/12… they finally arrived on 6/15 via USPS. When my sister opened them they were dry packed, wrapped in nothing but butcher paper, and were nearly dead. Three out of 17 never bounced back. One of the three varieties (the purple) had only 5 slips instead of the advertised 6. They never responded to my email about the problems.

The most egregious issue is with the CobraHead mini weeder tool that I ordered. I’ve emailed them about it, fb messaged them about it, and called them about it. They haven’t responded to any of my messages. As of today, 7/13, I haven’t received it so I finally just did a chargeback on my credit card for that portion of the order.

I have had to add SESE to my no buy list over this. The complete lack of communication is unacceptable. Just a heads up for yall to consider if you were thinking about ordering from them.

I’m having the foundation repaired in the original part of my house (pre-1870s, unsure of exact date). Naturally this has me thinking more deeply about how the house was built and when additional rooms would have been added on.

I just tonight realized, after 5 years of living here, that the back wall of the 2nd floor of the house doesn’t have a matching interior wall running under it for about half of its length. In the pic I’ve drawn a green line where there are matching 1st and 2nd story walls inside. The red squiggle is where I would have expected an interior wall on the 1st floor to support the 2nd floor exterior wall, and on the other side of the house there is a wall there, but there is nothing through the dining room. I am 95% confident that the dining room would have been original to the house- not an addition where a wall would have been removed.

I’ll be talking to my structural guy hopefully tomorrow evening about this but in the mean time am I missing something? Is this not weird and concerning?
