Is it currently possible IPV6 with SLAAC and ULA?

I recently set up pihole. The ipv4 setup went smooth as butter. The ipv6 setup didn't.

To the best of my understanding the preferred method is to have ULA with fd00:: addresses. That provides for routing between different vlans. Then the gateway can point any vlan to the VLA of the pihole DNS server.

Currently I have only my main vlan with ipv6 enabled. This lets me run ipv6 is SLAAC, stateless DHCP. Then point DNS to the link local address of the pihole server. This works for now but is only a band aid. If I ever need another vlan with ipv6 then this setup will no longer works becasue link local addresses can't route beyond the local subnet.

Are there any other options or do I just wait until ULA is rolled out by TP-Link?

Strange behavior of my wifi.

I have 3 wifi networks that have been running for a year or so. Regular network for the adults. A network for the kids. This lets me filter our unwanted sites via EAP Rules. Finally an IOT network for my home automation stuff.

Kids come to me asking why the internet is not working. I'm watching a streaming show on HTPC and browsing on my phone. The internet is clearly working. I check the tablet, the kid wifi is gone. I check my phones wifi. The regular and IOT networks are visible but the kid one is no where to be found. I'm at a loss. No single failure that I can think of would nerf a single wifi network out of 3. In the controller the networks can't even be shut off. Either the network is there or it's not.

A reboot of the access points seems to have solved the issue.

Is there something else for me to check or do? How does something like that happen?

My setup:

  1. Software controller 6.2.10.17.
  2. ER707-M2 router.
  3. SG2428P switch.
  4. EAP650 access point quantity 2.

Everything is up tondate on firmware.

PiHole with ipv6?

Please note that I am a total novice at ipv6.

I have had a vm running ubuntu for a while. I finally decided to spin up pihole. The ipv4 setup went great. The vm already had a reserved ip address. I pointed my omada controller to send ipv4 dns requests to the local address, done.

I have now failed at least 3 times to set up the pihole with ipv6. My current try is as follows. Omada controller ipv6 is set to SLAAC, stateless DHCP. The ubuntu vm is set to auto ipv6. To the best of my understanding the local link address, the one starting with fe80, should be static. With ipv6.ip6-privacy: "-1" the vm shouldn't change it. I'm also a linux novice and not sure what else to check to make sure the local link address won't change. Now in the omada controller I point the dns to the fe80 address and at least for now everything seems to be working. I have had it working before but it stopped working overnight.

Does my setup look reasonable or am I missing something or am I totally wrong?

When you move what do you take and what would you leave with the house?

I've recently acquired some patch panels have started landing cat5e on them for the house. This brought me to the question of if I move do I leave the patch panels behind? My house is almost 100 years old. I've been using my homelab to slowly chip away at some of the shortcomings of an old house. For example there are 9 lights in the basement, 8 of them were pull chains. I installed shelly relays on all of them and tied them together so that the single switched light turns all of them on and off. I'm not sure if I would want to rip them all out if I choose to move.

Is there unwritten code or some type of expectation as what is and is not left behind?

I'm not planning to move any time soon, just curious.

How long should I wear the belt after surgery?

I had a small umbilical hernia repair 3 days ago. It was robotic with mesh. As I was leaving post procedure they put a support belt on me and gave me no guidance about the belt. The instructions that I got were don't lift anything heavier than 10-15 lbs for 4 to 6 weeks. Alternate between Tylenol and ibuprofen. That was it.

How long should I wear the belt? Wear it all the time or can I take it off at night in bed? (I'm a side sleeper)

I have been totally chewed out by unify fanboys about rebooting and up time. "My uptime is in years" they exclaim. Realistically speaking Omada, at least I don't think, can get that kind of uptime.

Currently I have an ER707-M2 router, SG2428P switch, two EAP650 access points, and a software controller running as a service on a windows 11 machine. In my two years of running an omada setup I have had one AP lock up which caused the wifi to die. Also have had the controller lock up which also cause the wifi to die.

At the moment I have scheduled my setup to reboot once a week. This includes the software controller for which I have a windows task that stops and then starts the service.

Am I being sensible or crazy, how often would you reboot?

This whole conundrum started when I upgraded my internet from 500 to 1 gig. At 500 everything ran great and speed tested appropriately. I would consistently test at 575 up and down. Now at 1 gig I'm not able to get a consistent speed test.

First I knew that my router was not up to task. I was using the Omada er605. It would handle the 1 gig but not with deep packet inspection (DPI). I like monitoring my traffic. I upgraded to the er707 m2. At least on paper it should handle 1800 mbit DPI. With overhead that should be plenty for my 1 gig. But with or without DPI I can't get a stable speed result. I typically use speedtest.net in chrome. I get 600 to 800 down and 924 up. Then I tried the speedtest.net windows app. It's a little better, I can occasionally get 915 down. Most of the other speed test websites are the same. Fast.com seems a bit more stable but not as consistent as I would like.

My set up is as follows. AT&T router with all the junk shut off and in bridge mode. This passes the external IP to my router. 2.5g connection from the ISP router to mine. From my router ER707 M2 to a switch SG2428P connected via SFP+ twinax cable. Everything else is connected to the switch via ethernet cable.

I'm starting to suspect that my computers are generally too old to run the tests properly. My newest machine is an amd ryzen 5 2400g making it 8 years old. It only gets worse. Third generation core I7. Finally Xeon(R) CPU E5-1620 v3.

What strategy do you use to reliably speed test your homelab?

I just replaced my ER605 with ER707 M2.

With the 605 and DPI turned off I would usually get high 700 occasionally 915. Upload was 915. Now with the 707 I get 600 down and 925 up. DPI turned off. Pretty consistently on two different computers.

The 707 is connected to modem via 2.5 gig link. Then connected to switch via SFP+ copper. The switch is an SG2428P. The two computers are plugged into the switch with 1gig links. All links show proper speed.

What am I missing? Is there a setting i need to change?

I've had an ER605 V2 for about 2 years and it has served just fine. Recently I upgraded my internet to 1 gig. I've been running 300 and then 500 up until now with DPI enabled. At the 1 gig the router definitely chokes, speeds tests between 600 and 700 down. With DPI disabled it sometimes gets 920 ish down but often it is in the high 700.

I'm thinking of upgrading to the ER707-M2. It claims a DPI throughput of roughly double of the 605. I'd like to keep DPI enabled. Would this upgrade be worthwhile?

April 23rd I got a notification that a new software controller version was available v6.2.10.15. I downloaded it. I typically will read the release notes before installing. When I went to read the notes there was nothing listed. When I checked my controller v6.2.0.17 was now fully up to date. What happened?
