I posted the same thing here and in Metal Madness.

But the numbers weren’t what got me. The comments were.
My original question was pretty fucking simple: Where is Jon?
We’re seeing Chris Caffery doing interview after interview while Jon Oliva is largely absent. So I asked the obvious question: Are we watching a new incarnation of Savatage, with Jon’s blessing, but with Chris becoming the public face?
That wasn’t an attack on Chris.
Anyone who remembers what made Savatage different knows it wasn’t just the songs or the name. It was Jon’s voice, his piano, his writing, and Criss Oliva’s guitar. You knew that fucking guitar within seconds. Together they created something nobody else sounded like.
Criss is gone. Jon’s health has changed what he can do. You can want Savatage back with everything you’ve got and still admit that without those two on that stage, it isn’t going to feel the same. That’s not disrespect. That’s history.
And THAT is what Metal Madness actually debated.
People disagreed with me, brought up other bands, other singers, other lineup changes and made actual arguments. Nobody had to agree. We just talked fucking metal. 🤘
Here, too much of it became “this guy again,” “we need moderation,” “don’t go see them,” and personal shit that had nothing to do with the question.
You can love the hell out of a band and still question its direction. That’s what fans have done forever.
And seriously, respect to the metalheads over in Metal Madness. A room damn near split down the middle and we still managed to shoot the shit about bands, history and music.
That was fucking awesome. That’s what talking metal is supposed to be. 🤘.
