Do you ever hate a song you made until months later?

Had this happen again where I thought my track was bad, then I listened back to it way later and actually liked it. Is anyone else's judgment on their own stuff just completely unreliable in the moment?

How many takes do you actually keep vs. re-record?

Be honest, are you the type to nail it in 2-3 takes, or do you record 15 versions of the same line before picking one? No judgment, just curious how everyone else's process actually looks. I usually record 10-20 takes before I feel like I got it

Why I stopped dragging vocal clips by hand and started using Time Shift

I used to drag vocal takes around manually to line them up with the beat. I started using Time Shift instead, and it's so much easier. It shifts the timing without messing with pitch or stretching the audio weirdly.

The best part is you don't even have to guess how far off you are. There's an audio latency feature in project settings that tells you exactly how much delay you're dealing with, so instead of eyeballing it, you know the actual number and can shift by that amount and be done.

Anyone else make this switch or still dragging clips by hand?

Been using Lyrics Pad to actually keep track of takes instead of just writing lyrics

I started using it less as a lyric sheet and more as a way to jot notes on which take was the keeper, what I wanted to fix, stuff like that. Small thing, but it's saved me from re-listening to like 10 versions of the same verse trying to remember which one I liked.

Anyone using any of the built-in tools for something other than their "intended" purpose?

What's the first thing you record when testing out a new song idea?

For me, it's almost always a rough vocal take of a hook idea I'm messing with, just to see if the melody's even worth chasing. Doesn't matter how bad the take is, I just need to hear it back to see if the idea sticks.

I'm curious, what's everyone else's "starting point"?

Small thing that made a big difference in my recordings: Using Auto Mix before I even think about EQ

I used to manually adjust the volume to get my vocals sitting right against the instrumental, re-adjusting every few bars. Started using Auto Mix to handle the level balancing automatically instead, and it saves me a surprising amount of back-and-forth. It balances vocals way faster than I can, so I can focus on the actual tone/effects side of things.

Anyone else sleeping on a feature that ended up saving a ton of time once you actually used it right?

Unpopular opinion: you don't need expensive gear to make a good song

A phone mic and wired headphones are genuinely enough to get a real idea down. Voloco's effects and mastering do the rest.

Better gear helps if you're chasing a polished studio sound, but for actually finishing songs instead of waiting for the "right" setup? You don't need the fancy equipment.

Anyone else holding off on recording because they think they need better gear first?

What's one Voloco feature you didn't know existed until recently?

Just found out about something in the app I've apparently had access to this whole time. Made me wonder what else I'm missing.

What are some features, shortcuts, or settings you didn't know about until recently?

I'll start: The Latency Detection + Time Shift settings in project options — used it to fix delay on my vocals and didn't even know it was there until recently.

We analyzed 10 Voloco tracks that hit our trending feed — here's what they all had in common

We looked at 10 tracks that made it to the trending feed lately and noticed a few things they had in common:

  • Structured: clear intro/verse/hook
  • One topic per song: no scattershot lyrics
  • Layered effects: different presets on different vocal layers, not one blanket effect
  • Clear vocals: good enunciation, easy to understand
  • Good beat selection
  • Hashtags: most used a few for discovery
  • Comments: every track had a lot, AND the creators were out there commenting on other people's tracks too

Our key takeaway: none of this is a strict formula, just stuff we kept noticing. Having a little structure, sticking to one idea, playing around with layered effects, and actually showing up in other people's comments all seemed to help.

How many songs do you have in the vault?

You know, those half-finished verses or hooks that need a slight retouch, or those full tracks you’re just not ready to drop yet. We all have a vault sitting there untouched (for now). How many do you have stashed away?

Did you know you can export your lyrics from Voloco?

If you've been using the Lyrics Pad to write while you record, you can save your lyrics outside of the app in just a few taps. Open the Lyrics Pad, tap the three dots next to your lyrics, hit Share, and save them as a .txt file to your device, iCloud, Google Drive, or Dropbox. You can also copy them straight to your clipboard.

A good habit to get into, especially if you're working on something you want to hold onto.

Did you know there are two ways to download your tracks from Voloco?

Whether you're on your phone or at your computer, getting your finished tracks out of Voloco is pretty straightforward.

From the mobile app: Tap the three dot menu next to any project in your library, select "Download as Audio," and choose where you want it saved on your device.

From the Voloco website: If you've published a track to your profile, you can also download it directly from voloco.com. Sign in, head to Tracks in the left menu, find your track, tap the three dot menu and hit Download. This is also a handy option if you no longer have the project saved in your library.

By default your tracks download as MP3s, but if you want WAV quality head into your Project Settings in the app and turn on "Export WAV files." WAV downloads are a Premium feature exclusive to the mobile app.
