Reapplying to McKinsey after getting rejected in Round 2 last year — timing, recruiters, and strategy?

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice on reapplying to McKinsey. Here is a brief summary of my situation:

  • Background: I applied last year, cleared the initial screening/tests, Round 1 and made it to Round 2 before ultimately getting a rejection.
  • Current Goal: McKinsey is still my top target, and I want to reapply soon.

I have a few specific questions on how to navigate this:

  1. Timing & Cooling-off Period: Since I made it to Round 2 last year, what is the current standard cooling-off period before I can reapply without getting auto-flagged by the system? Is it strictly 12 months, or closer to 18-24 months for interview candidates?
  2. Reaching Out to Old Recruiters: Should I email the recruiter who handled my process last year to ask if I'm eligible to reapply, or does that draw unnecessary attention? If I do reach out, what’s the best way to frame the email without sounding desperate?
  3. Maximizing Interview Chances: Since recruiters will have my old interview notes on file, what specific steps should I take to ensure I get invited to interview again once the window opens? (e.g., how to highlight growth on my resume, securing internal referrals, etc.)

Would really appreciate insights from anyone who successfully reapplied and got an offer after an interview rejection, or from any former/current consultants or recruiters who know how the ATS handles re-applicants.

Thanks in advance!
