Hello! I’m doing some work on an ‘81 Rabbit Pickup and I am trying to address this leak around the shift rod on the transmission. As seen in the pictures, the area surrounding this point is covered in grease so I’m pretty sure it’s coming from this spot and not the speedometer sensor. When I took the attaching shift linkage off, this boot that surrounds the rod on the transmission was loosely attached to the transmission. The puzzling part about it was that there doesn’t seem to be any way to attach it to the transmission besides just sliding it on. Do you know of any ways to secure it better?
Ideally, I’d like to clean the whole area up, repack the boot with grease, and attempt to secure the transmission side of the boot better.
