Tell LADOT you support bike lanes & improvements for Westwood Blvd

From the LADOT email:

>During the first phase of engagement, community members consistently prioritized pedestrian and bicyclist safety, as well as better connections between UCLA and Metro stations. In response, LADOT is proposing Class IV protected bike lanes, bus-only lanes, and pedestrian safety improvements along Westwood Blvd.

>As we begin the second phase of outreach, we want to hear your feedback on the proposed design! Your feedback helps ensure the proposed design addresses the traffic safety issues and reflects local context we heard during the first phase of community outreach.

Voice your support HERE.

Naturally it's important that LADOT hear a lot of support for their proposed improvements so they can push back against inevitable NIMBY opposition.

A look at the voxel tech in our Unreal 5 sandbox RPG

Hi folks, I was the creative director of a discontinued voxel RPG called Everdeep Dungeons (it was a spiritual successor to a previous game I helped create called Portal Knights). Sadly our team ran out of runway, but we’re proud of what we made and I wanted to share a glimpse of it.

Some interesting technical highlights built by our amazing programmer Jarl https://jarllarsson.github.io/gen/home.html

  • We built our voxel system inside Unreal 5, including a custom solution for getting the voxel world to play nicely with Lumen
  • To give our blocks a bit more charm, we added chamfered edges using a procedural approach that extended a 2D "dual grid" / autotiling technique into 3D https://www.boristhebrave.com/2023/05/31/quarter-tile-autotiling/
  • We used world position offset materials on certain terrain, like dirt, to break up the otherwise flat surfaces and give them a more organic feel (inspired by a game called Wonderbox)
  • We also used parallax occlusion mapping to add some depth to things like stonework without adding more geometry
  • To give some abilities and effects a bit more “oomph”, we created a system we called “voxel displacement” which would temporarily shift voxels out of place. We used it for things like shockwaves and sand worms, and think it looked pretty cool :)

If you have any questions, AMA.

City Council wants to kill expanding the Council and ranked choice voting — tell them NO!

As another post mentioned, there is a critical meeting tomorrow (June 12) where the Rules Committee will be recommending which Charter Reforms should be put to voters in November, and which should be killed. And last night, the Chief Legislative Assistant slipped out a report recommending that most Charter Reforms be killed ("further study is required" or "note and file").

This is after 12 months, 50+ Charter Commission meetings, and tons of expert advice. The last time the Charter was reformed was in 1999, and the current number of City Council members was set in 1925. We have one of the worst ratios of elected representatives to residents among major U.S. cities, which has resulted in famously high corruption.

To be clear, there are a LOT of other good Charter Reforms they're trying to kill — police reform, better parks & street repair funding, etc., but personally City Council expansion and ranked choice voting feel like they could be the most politically transformative.

Some more info is available here.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Please consider calling your Council member, filing a public comment, or showing up in person!
