Does this game turn everyone into some kind of feverish imp trying to traverse anything and everything regardless of whether there is any need for it?

I hit the wall switch in this room and then I landed in the miasma or what have you. The goo. The mist. The stuff on the floor. Anyways it reset me on the opposite side of this gate from where the switch was.
