We moved out of a rental apartment at the end of May and I’d really love to recover the $2100 security deposit on the place, but our former landlord has ghosted us since we returned the keys. I’ve read that landlords are obligated to return the security deposit or provide an itemized list of deductions within 30 days of tenants vacating. I don’t have really any experience with this kind of thing but I’m thinking about filing in small claims to try to recover the money.

Has anyone gone through that process in Knox county? What was your experience like? $2100 would go a long way for me right now but I don’t want to throw away another $100 filing if it won’t go anywhere. Thanks for any insight!
