Koda has always been a chewer and loves her bones but she always held them in between her two paws. I realized after surgery she was struggling with her previous joy. But tonight she finally figured out how to chew on them again instead of just running around the house with it in her mouth.
9 years ago today we brought our girl home for the first time. Can’t believe almost 2 months ago now we almost lost her. Now she is thriving and back to her normal annoying, constant need for attention, always in your space, love you til the day you die lab self.
Obviously calling the vet in the morning to get her in but we are almost 2 months post op from osteosarcoma in her front leg and Koda has been having random potty accidents in the house and she has not had these before since she was a puppy. We have had maybe once a week and usually in our closet at night/early morning which is where her bed is. Today though she had another one in our closet and she had already been outside after having dinner. Then about an hour or two later she had another one downstairs, not sure if she had been given more water or not but we have noticed she has seemed to be drinking more since the operation. Hoping to get her in and it’s just a urinary tract infection but hoping to see if anyone else had issues like this after their doggie surgery.
Laid down on the floor to get a picture of her and she decided to come over and lay down as close as possible without physically being on top of me. She has never been one to give you personal space.

Has anyone's pup ever started laying in new random places after surgery? Koda sleeps in our closet in an area that has always given her comfort. She always enjoyed her kennel as a pup and once she didn't need it anymore we created a safe space for her to go when she needed a break from the chaos of our house wih kids. We got her upstairs last weekend so she could get back to that safe space and get some good rest. While she has enjoyed it we are also finding her in some very odd places. She is now laying in the room our shower and toilet are in, mainly on the bathmat and today my husband could not find her before he left. He ended up in our kiddos bathroom where she was curled up on their bathmat in the dark. It just seems so odd that she is in those places now when she never has laid there before.
Ever since she came off meds her personality has started coming back. Today she came out front with us and tried to chase a tennis ball my husband tossed back out of the garage to our son and the neighbor boys. She enjoyed lots of rubs when they realized she was out and thrived on the attention. She is hustling all around almost running and has navigated up and down the stairs with no harness. Still can’t believe we almost lost her two weeks ago.
I wanted to cry this morning. I came down with Koda to let her out and give her food and water. Helped her down the stairs, little rough but did ok. I ran to our basement as she was drinking and came back up and found her gone. Had heard a weird sound so I looked up the stairs. She had gone up the first set by herself and was rounding the next set to go up to our room and lay back down. I am just so amazed by her and how she has quickly adapted to this new life!!
Got her coming up again so she could go lay by our front door and look out.
Yesterday Koda went to get her staples out. They left an area in to give it some more time to heal so we will get the rest out next week. But her lymph node that they removed and tested came back clean!! We officially know it didn’t spread to her lungs or lymph nodes. Tonight we helped her up the stairs for the first time to come to our room where she has always slept to see if a change in scenery will help calm her. She has been pretty panty and agitated/uncomfortable since come off meds. We have given her a 300mg dose of pain meds in the evenings to help sleep along with an anxiety pill. She is getting along so well and the vet said she looks amazing compared to when he saw her last.
Coming up on 2 weeks since Koda’s initial surgery. She made her longest trek around the yard today by herself while our son and a friend played on the trampoline and she did her typical perimeter check of the yard. Had to tell her it was time to come in as she wanted to stay out with them 😊 tonight will be her first night of not waking up to take pain meds. Still has an anti-inflammatory and blood clot prevention pill to take plus her anxiety meds. Two more days and she will get her sutures out. She got a new bed and promptly fell asleep on it after noticing she was flopping back and forth on the thinner profile one. 🤞🏼 to a good nights sleep.
She is loving her morning grass sits, even better in the sun. Today she walked unassisted from the back door to the grass and stood to do her business. Chilled for a bit then stood up when she was ready to go back in.
Definitely need to start getting her up and out 2-3 times a day so her back legs can get stronger.
Koda has been doing great since coming home! The last 2 days she has gotten out twice to lay in the grass and potty outside. She has gotten herself up in the grass and walked a little unassisted. Getting stronger everyday! Figured out she needs anxiety meds in the evening to help her sleep through the night but doing so good taking her boatload of medicine.
6 days later and she is finally home with a boatload of medications! She is doing great already on her 3 legs and enjoyed some time laying in the grass when we got home.
I posted a couple of days ago about Koda taking a turn after her initial surgery to remove her leg. She lost a lot of red blood platelets and after going to a place overnight after surgery then moving 24 hours later to an emergency 24/7 vet staff she ended up going back into surgery there less than a day after being there. They found that 2 of her muscles were still bleeding internally and she would have not made it had we not given them the go for surgery. We are almost a day after the 2nd surgery now and she is holding steady on her numbers after some blood transfusions. I was able to get her to eat a smidge when we went to visit today and she is taking meds orally now. We know the milestones she needs to hit to come home but she is not out of the woods yet.
I made a post about a week or so ago about our Koda needing an amputation due to osteosarcoma. We had the surgery scheduled then rescheduled 2 more times due to things with the original surgeon. She had her surgery yesterday( 5/13) and ended up at an overnight care hospital for recovery. She did not eat until some point this morning and when we visited this afternoon she had started eating more. The vet did talk about her levels dropping and possibly needing moved to a facility that has a vet 24/7. This one just has vet techs/nurses from 7-7 monitoring. They are talking about if it continues dropping and needing a blood transfusion. I’m having so much anxiety about moving her again after going from where she had surgery to this hospital and so scared for what’s happening. She was alert when we saw her and eating and drinking and they have gotten her up and walking a couple of different times. I talked to our original vet that started all of this and she gave me a lot of advice in next step options. Koda is getting her levels checked again in about an hour and a half and I am just praying they start plateauing out or only dropping just a bit but so worried for what’s happening and even worse that we are not with her.
Tomorrow is the day, this sweet girl is going in for her surgery to get rid of the pain and cancer in her leg. Any tips or advice for once she comes home? I was feeling really good last week once we made the decision but now that is so close I’m freaking out just a little. Just want to make sure we are watching out for things and giving her all the great care she deserves in recovery. Trying to gather any questions I will have for the vet in the morning but if anyone has anything they wished they would’ve asked lay it on me!
