ES1 Crashes every time I select "Shot profile"

UPDATE: Seems I'm not the only one. I sent a report to support. I'm sure they can fix in a future firmware update. Thanks form confirming everyone!

UPDATE: See comments for possible temporary fix to try from Fellow

---

Every time I wake up ES1 to make espresso, it crashes and reboots when I select "Shot profile" for the first time. Anyone else dealing with this? Is it a known issue?

Steps to re-create:

  1. Wake from sleep
  2. Select "Shot profile" (system crashes/reboots)
  3. Select "shot profile" (works)

Very close to giving up on the Opus 2.

1st one was WAY off calibration. I'm now 8 steps finer from out of box.

This new one I can barely turn the dial.

Fellow has GOT to improve their build quality and QA. Their saving grace is that they will exchange. But good lord, the process of finding a grinder that works correctly should not be on the customer. This is unacceptable, and brand-tarnishing.

Opus 2 - Grinder Adjustment

I needed to adjust my Opus 2 to grind finer. Here are the steps I used. These are not official steps from Fellow, and I encourage anyone with grinder issues to contact Fellow first to see if they recommend adjusting your grinder, so you don't risk voiding your warranty in any way. I will try to update this post asap if any improvements or corrections come up.

Important: THERE IS NO HARD STOP TO PREVENT YOUR BURRS FROM CLASHING.

Tools:

  • narrow flathead screw driver
  • needle nose pliers/tweezers

Step 1 - Unplug your grinder

Step 2 - Set grind setting all the way to zero and remove the lid

Set grinder to zero

Step 3 - Remove the hopper

Twist the hopper counter-clockwise until you can lift it up and off. Set it aside.

Remove the hopper

Step 4 - Remove the outer burr

Lift the metal handle, twist counter-clockwise, and lift out. (This is also a great time to clean out the grinder with a vacuum).

Outer burr handle

Twist counter-clockwise and pull out

Step 5 - Remove adjustment dial cover (see picture, then steps below)

  • There are two tabs on either side of this plastic ring. Carefully press in on the tab with a flathead screw driver and slightly lift the cover with your other hand.
  • Hold that side of the cover to prevent it from clicking back in while you use the screw driver to do the same on the other tab. Once you have released both tabs, you can lift the entire cover off and set it aside.

Push tab with screwdriver and lift

Hold cover while pushing and lifting other tab

Once it's free, you can lift the cover off and set it aside.

Step 6 - Remove screws

You can use a Phillips or narrow flat head screw driver to remove the screws. You can't quite fit your fingers in the groove to pull out the screws, so it's handy to have the needle nose pliers or tweezers available to pull them out.

Adjustment dial cover removed

Loosen both screws

Remove screws

Step 7 - Adjust your grind calibration

At this point, you can slightly lift the grind dial and rotate it clockwise by one or two notches to allow for a finer grind. As you turn, you'll feel the dial slip into the next notch where you can allow it to set back down, and you'll see the grind setting in front align to a new notch above the red line. At this point, or after reassembling, you can turn your adjustment knob (the one on the side) finer to set your new "zero" setting. I ended up going 7 steps finer before the light roast I was brewing pulled a good shot at zero. You may not need that much. I would only adjust 1-2 notches at a time, and then test a shot to see if it's fine enough. Remember, THERE IS NO HARD STOP TO PREVENT YOUR BURRS FROM CLASHING.

Lift slightly and turn

Set back in place

With the screws fully removed, you can remove the adjustment dial component. You should notice a black line indicating the factory aligned setting. If you ever need to return your adjustment dial to factory, just line these up.

Factory setting

TIP: For future adjustments, you don't need to fully remove the screws, you can just loosen them enough so you can lift the adjustment dial and turn it to your new setting. This makes future adjustments a little easier. I just wanted to make sure you saw the black line indicating your original factory setting.

Reassembly

  1. Using the pliers, carefully place the screws back in the holes and hand tighten them
  2. Insert the adjustment dial cover so the tabs align with the holes and it snap in.
  3. Insert the outer burr and twist clockwise until it clicks in.
  4. Place the hopper on the grinder slightly rotated counter-clockwise from center and twist clockwise until it locks in place and the lock icon is centered.
  5. Put your lid on and plug in your grinder

Good luck!

Fellow App - Save button stopped working?

When creating or editing an ES1 profile, the Save button no longer works. Luckily if you tap the back button, you can still save and exit. Just odd that it suddenly started going this. Anyone else experiencing this?

Tally scale - Total brew output number changes when pressing the start timer button.

9 times out of 10, when pressing the timer start button, my total output in grams goes down by 1 or 2 grams. Not the end of the world, but it's the opposite of "precision". Is this a hardware issue? Or can a firmware update fix this?

Talley Pro Feature Request

Let us adjust ratio any time during brew on the brew assist mode. Many times, during a brew, I can see the coffee reacting a certain way, and would love to change the brew ratio on the fly. I can't see why it has to be locked in after starting the brew. Free the dial!
