Confusion on establishing Bazi pattern (Ge‑Ju): Month branch inner qi vs revealed heavenly stems?
Hi everyone, I’ve been studying classical Bazi pattern theory and I keep running into conflicting opinions on how to set the main pattern. I’m trying to trace back to classical sources to clear this up.
There are two major viewpoints I keep seeing online:
- Month‑branch (Yue‑ling) priority: Pattern is decided by the hidden qi inside the month earthly branch, regardless of whether that qi shows up on any heavenly stem.
- Revealed stem (Tou‑gan) priority: Only use energies that appear on the heavenly stems to define the pattern, even if that energy originates from the month branch.
I’ve read excerpts from Zi Ping Zhen Quan, Yuan Hai Zi Ping and San Ming Tong Hui, but I cannot figure out what the original mainstream rule really was.
Some points I’m confused about:
- The opening line of Zi Ping Zhen Quan says “seek the useful god exclusively from the month order”. Does this mean we take month‑branch qi as pattern even when nothing is revealed on top?
- Many people mention that mixed‑earth months (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei) require a revealed stem to form a proper pattern. What about pure single‑qi months like Zi, Mao, You? Can we set a pattern even with zero revealed stems?
- If none of the month‑branch hidden stems appear on the heavenly stems at all, what should we do? Do we still set an orthodox eight‑pattern, or move to special/variant patterns?
I would really appreciate references to original classic text quotes, or traditional case examples that illustrate this rule. I want to understand the historically accepted logic instead of modern simplified takes. Thank you very much.
