Selected for Amazon ML Summer School 2026 from a Tier-3 college.

Got selected for Amazon ML Summer School 2026.

I just wanted to post this for every student who thinks being from a Tier-3 college automatically puts them at a disadvantage.

Your college may influence the opportunities you get initially, but it does not define your potential. Consistent learning, building real projects, understanding concepts deeply, and staying curious matter far more in the long run.

An entrance exam is just one milestone in life. It doesn't permanently define your credibility, your knowledge, or what you're capable of achieving as an engineer or researcher.

To everyone from Tier-3 colleges: don't underestimate yourself or stop aiming high. Compete with your work, not with your college name.

Keep learning, keep building, and let your projects speak for themselves.

Need a roadmap to build a career in AI/ML and eventually settle abroad

Hi everyone,
I’m currently a second-year B.Tech Computer Science student from India.
Alongside my B.Tech, I’m also pursuing the BS in Data Science and Applications from IIT Madras.
My long-term goal is to build a successful career in AI/ML and eventually settle abroad. One of my biggest motivations is to be able to provide a better life for my parents and hopefully bring them with me in the future.
I come from a middle-class family. We could potentially manage the finances for a master’s degree if it becomes necessary, but scholarships would be strongly preferred.

Current profile:

B.Tech in Computer Science (Tier-3 college)
IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications
Interested in AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, LLMs, and Data Science

Have built several AI/ML projects
Comfortable with Python and ML fundamentals
I’d consider myself somewhere between beginner and intermediate in ML

What I’m confused about is the roadmap.

Should I:
Focus on getting an AI/ML job directly after graduation?
Aim for a master’s degree abroad?
Focus heavily on research and publications?
Prioritize internships and industry experience?
Prepare for scholarships from now?
Focus on open source and competitive programs?
If you were in my position today (2nd year undergraduate, interested in AI/ML, goal of working abroad),
what would your roadmap for the next 3-5 years look like?
Specifically, I’d like advice on:
Skills I should learn
Projects that actually matter
Research vs internships
Master’s vs direct job route
Countries with good opportunities in AI/ML
Scholarships and funded master’s programs
Mistakes I should avoid
I’m willing to put in the work and start preparing now. I just don’t want to spend the next few years optimizing for the wrong things.
Any guidance from people working abroad, AI engineers, researchers, or master’s students would be greatly appreciated.

“My ultimate goal isn’t just moving abroad. It’s building a strong AI/ML career, achieving financial stability, and creating enough opportunities that I can support my parents long-term.”

What are the best free and underrated AI/ML programs, fellowships, internships, and opportunities that students often miss?

I’m looking for lesser-known but high-quality opportunities in AI, machine learning, data science, and related fields that are free or provide funding/stipends. These could include:
● Fellowships
● Research programs
● Internships
● Mentorship programs
● Open-source initiatives
● Competitions and challenges
● Summer schools or bootcamps
● Student ambassador programs
● Remote opportunities
I’m especially interested in programs that undergraduate or high school students can apply to, but feel free to share opportunities for graduate students as well.
If you’ve participated in any of these programs, I’d love to hear about your experience, application tips, and what you gained from them. Links and deadlines would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

How can I maximize my chances for a top MS in AI/CS coming from a Tier-3 college in India?

Currently I'm pursuing:

B.Tech TY Computer Science & Engineering from MET Institute of Technology, Nashik (Tier-3 college) : CGPA6.5

BS Data Science and Applications from IIT Madras (online degree program) : Foundation

My ultimate goal is to be accepted into a top tier AI/CS university (Stanford, CMU, MIT, Berkeley, UIUC, Georgia Tech, ETH Zurich, Oxford, Cambridge, etc.) for MS or potentially a PhD down the line.

My current profile:

Academics: B.Tech CSE | IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications | low GPA but strong inclination towards AI, ML, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, NLP and Reinforcement Learning.

Projects:

  1. GPT-style Transformer implemented from scratch using PyTorch (including Self-attention, Multi-head attention, Positional encoding and text generation)

  2. Reinforcement Learning Pong Agent (Q-Learning, custom training pipeline, and experiment tracking & visualization)

  3. StudyRAG (Ingestion of PDF, creation of embeddings, semantic search and RAG based Q&A)

  4. Multiple ML and CV projects (YOLO/OpenCV based applications, spam detection, prediction systems, AI chatbots)

Skills:

Python
PyTorch
Scikit-Learn
OpenCV
SQL
Git/GitHub
LangChain

Current Interests:

Machine Learning
Deep Learning
LLMs
Agentic AI
Reinforcement Learning

Questions:

  1. What is the most important factor for top AI/CS graduate admissions currently?
  2. How much weight does undergraduate research hold compared to projects?
  3. What kind of publications are realistic to achieve for a student at a Tier-3 college?
  4. How would you prioritize among: Research, Open Source contributions, Competitive Programming, Hackathons, Internships, GPA
  5. Will strong research and publications outweigh the disadvantage of coming from a less renowned university?
  6. What are the apparent gaps in my profile?
  7. If you were in my place right now, what would be your 2-3 year plan?

I would really appreciate any brutal honest feedback from any current MS/PhD students, professors, researchers, or anyone who successfully got into top AI/CS programs from a non-IIT/non-NIT background.
