Need to have a hard conversation with my ST

I am a cooperating teacher for a practicum student. We have it set so that she comes on Wednesdays, but one time she messaged me the night before saying that she had too much homework to do so she couldn't come. The most recent time, she messaged me the morning of and said she overslept. I told her she is welcome any time during the day, and she said she was just going to help her mom clean the house instead. She usually just observes when she comes in, despite me telling her she can jump in when a student needs help and I'm working with another student.

I messaged her professor about it, and she has concerns about my ST too. She does not seem engaged in class, and she was not participating in this community event they did. She is going to talk with the director of the program, and they are going to have a conversation with her and make a plan.

I have to fill out my ST's midterm evaluation, and I know i have to mark her low on some of the "professional dispositions". Obviously she can see that and I need to talk to her about it. I'm just nervous because I want to see if she's okay first, but i want her to know that in order to be a teacher, you have to show up, even on days you feel like you can't. I want to come across as empathetic and also professional.

Any advice from other CTs? I've only ever had one other practicum student before, and he was fantastic.

Elementary teachers - how often do you notify when students get below a C on assignments?

I am in a clinical faculty program this summer and I was checking my school email for class info.

When I opened my email, a parent, who is another teacher at my school, emailed me, the reading specialist, and the principal about this kid's reading grade on his report card. The parent claims that she was not able to see any grades in the online gradebook and that they are heartbroken that he was struggling without their knowledge.

The kid was in reading intervention this year. He has had B's, B minuses, and now a C+ in reading all year. I think the reason his grade dipped a little is because he got 60s on the last 3 reading assignments we did. One was a classwork grade, one a quiz, and one a test, all were comprehension assessments that were created by the district that align with our reading curriculum. Two of those assignments took the kid only 5 minutes to do.

I'm wondering if any elementary teachers contact families when students get low grades on assignments?? This parent being a teacher should've been accessing the grade portal all year. This year has been the worst with parents freaking out at me when kids get a C.

ISS for disruptive behaviors

We just had a school board meeting last week and they finally updated the student code of conduct. All elementary students can now get ISS for disrupting class or causing a disruption outside of the classroom. They can also get ISS and OSS for failure to respond or comply with adult directions. I had 2 kids this year that were like that and we couldn't suspend them unless they started throwing stuff, which did happen several times. But the other kids in the class couldn't learn with the noise making and yelling. One of them would yell "stop looking at me" to other kids all the time and nothing was done. The other one would yell "why is everyone so mean to me" when other kids asked him to stop making noises. So I'm anxious to see what happens next year with our new principal. They need to do half the day in ISS as academic work and half the day as behavior skills imo.

Defiance with no admin support?

I know it is the end of the school year but I want some advice for when I inevitably come across this again.

I teach 4th grade. I've had a student who started becoming really defiant and having meltdowns after a new student moved in to our class in October. She is on the spectrum and I was able to get her an IEP this year. The defiance and meltdowns are not new, but she supposedly had a great year in 3rd grade even though I talked to the 3rd grade teacher and she also saw defiance and work refusal last year and I do a lot of the same things.

When this kid won't listen or complete work admin does nothing. I've talked with mom and mom always says she'll talk to her. The behavior might change for part of the day then she's back at it. Like yesterday I wanted her to finish 2 pages (down from 10 pages) in this reading activity packet. One of her favorite subjects is reading and it included drawing which she also loves. She just tells me "but I don't feel like writing." And I asked if she would like me to write for her (because she has a scribe in her IEP) and she said "but I don't feel like talking." And I told her she can either keep reading and she won't get stars on her chart and I'll have to tell her mom that she did no work or she can finish the 2 pages and be done.

On Tuesday apparently she was in the lunch room yelling at other students to be quiet and she was on the stage and going behind curtains and not following directions from cafeteria staff to get down. The called for admin and got no response. And at music practice later she was doing the same thing. And i asked admin to speak with her and they said they would but it's been 2 days and nothing.

I have built a relationship with her, she likes to talk to me about the stuff she's reading in her book and just random stuff. I don't think it's because she doesn't like me.

What can I do about defiance when admin won't step in after I have tried everything I can think of?

Even central office doesn't care

4th grade teacher. I had a re-eval eligibility meeting for one of my behavior students today.

At the end of the meeting we started talking about what to put in the IEP. The case manager and I want the self contained SPED teacher to case manage him next year because he really needs to be in self contained for behavior but he's on grade level academically. He passed his reading and math state test.

The SPED person from central office was there and said "Well if he passed his reading and math when he has basically done no work all year, do we even care if he does his work?" as a way to not get him into self contained I think. And the principal chimed in and said that he is very disruptive in gen Ed to everyone else. So I said "I don't really care if he does his work or not, but I care about all the other kids. They deserve to learn without him interrupting all day." And that shut the central office lady up real quick.

10 more days and he's no longer my problem.

This group is the worst I've had

I need to shout into the void. I'm a seventh year teacher, 4th grade. The helplessness, the neediness, the apathy, it's all unreal.

We are reviewing for our math SOL (state test). We have the most to cover out of all K-5. I'm trying to review things from the beginning of the year like fractions and decimals (because they don't remember it). Now they learned how to add and subtract fractions in 3rd grade. We don't even do unlike denominators. The worksheet even had pictures on it. All of my usual suspects hands go up saying that they don't get it. Well it doesn't seem like they don't get it, they just want me to stand right next to them while they read it and talk through it with me. I can't even try to pull them all to my teacher table and do it because they just won't do it unless I am only paying attention to them.

And then there's one of my special friends who knows how to do things but lacks the motivation to do it. And in her IEP it says she can request a scribe so I have to write things down for her. And she gets upset if I try to leave for a second to help someone else. But I have a para in the room but she's scared of the behavior kids and she isn't great at keeping the needy ones on task if I ask her to work with them at my teacher table.

And then one of my "needy, won't do it unless I read it and stand next to him" kids was told by the para that he needs to be on this one paper and he told her no. Then I told him to go back to his seat since he isn't listening and he just sat at the table for 5 minutes. And when I went over there again to tell him to move, he sat at his desk for 5 minutes then went and laid on the floor in the peace corner (like one of my behavior kids does when he doesn't want to do work).

I've contacted home about the helplessness and inability to work without someone standing over their shoulder for the 6 needy ones but they just think I'm picking on their child. I'm so over this year and I don't know why admin put all these kids together.
