Simple framework to start with for kids

Hi,

My daughter (9y/o) likes to game and is very creative. I try to encourage her creativity so instead of just letting her game whenever she wants, I’m introducing her to the dev-side of it a bit (at her own request). I started with hooking up Minecraft Java + Cursor IDE to the tv, so she could make her own mods with help from ChatGPT for the technical bits. This proved to be a fun, quick-reward way to get into this (and she already loved Minecraft).

Now she wants to create her own game from scratch. Obviously just as a fun, hobby project, with a lot of help of AI. I’m a fullstack webdev myself so I understand some basics, but am not knowledgable in gamedev (apart from some JS-based, in-browser stuff).

What kind of engine/framework/setup would you guys recommend for her to start with? Preferably something that runs on Mac (or PS5). I think I’m looking for something where she can create some models, think of some mechanics, create a simple level, and fiddle/try it fast without having tons of overhead to get right to get it to even run or be interactive.

Would greatly appreciate your input! 💚
