heavily infected toe

i’m gonna start this post off by saying my toe doesn’t look like this anymore. this post is more of just a question of “what is this?”

This photo was taken in september of 2025 and ever since neither big toe has looked like this. My life is different now but I’m gonna enter my personal info based off that date.

female, 15, unmedicated, 140lbs, 5’3
no smoking/substances or alcohol

I had this infection in both of my big toes for about 7 years, for the first two years they started off as just little puss pockets in the corner of my toenails.
As time went on they got worse and worse (and i know popping them probably wasnt smart but i was 8!) and it was almost like nerves were mixed in with the pockets and they kept growing and growing.

The photo is the peak of the infection. The nail had just fallen off and I took a shower + cleaned the toe up somewhat then took the photo.
Immediately after the nail fell off it was ultimate relief because before that it was excruciating pain and I had to walk a certain way to not put pressure on my toes.

My right big toenail took a little longer to fall off but once it did it also healed the same way and now theres no pain at all.

The nails have grown ever since they fell off but its half the usual length they should be.

I also would like to add that I never told my parents or asked for help because my sister has toe problems as well and she’s had to get those really bad numbing shots. Even after 2 procedures on her toes her stuff kept coming back so I didn’t think it was worth getting the shots if it’ll just come back lol.

So yeah, this post is more just wondering what this was, if anyone even knows.
