Forgot phone charger :(

Hi all,

I stupidly forgot my phone charger and my phone battery is about to die. I am new to VUW, and was wondering if there are phone charging stations on campus? I have my adapter but no cord (USB-C). My phone can charge wirelessly too. Tysm!

Good places on campus to sit and do work for a few hours?

Hi all!

I’m new to Wellington/VUW so I’m still figuring out the campus and where other students go to study/do work. I didn’t really get a proper tour of the university, but I’ve walked around a bit and found a few random spots that look promising. However, I don’t really know the do’s & don’ts here yet so I’d rather not accidentally settle somewhere I’m not actually supposed to be and end up in an awkward situation, lol.

I’m looking for somewhere I can sit for a few hours (5+ hours probably) and do research without having to constantly move around. I’m fine with a bit of background noise, just not somewhere that’s really loud or distracting. Ideally somewhere with a power outlet to charge my laptop, comfortable seating w/ a table, WiFi, and not freezing cold, lol. Oh, and free would be ideal! (At my previous university (overseas), there were cafes where you could buy one coffee and hunker down for hours. Super cheap, but on a student budget it was honestly ideal.)

I’ve got some tight deadlines coming up, so I’m really trying to find somewhere I can focus without feeling like I’m in the way! Keen to hear where other people go when they need to get a decent amount of work done. :)

Tips on where to get cheap household basics for move-in

Kia ora,

Recently moved to Wellington from overseas and moving into our rental this weekend. In need of household basics and furniture for cheap. We won't be living in Welly long (here to study for a few years), so we don't want to spend too much.

Facebook Marketplace has been on place we have looked. Someone also recommended we join the FREE STUFF WELLINGTON group on Facebook, which has been amazing, but the furniture items get claimed before I can figured out how to pick them up.

We checked out Trash Palace, Free for All Petone and one of the Salvation Army stores in our area. Bought some cheap kitchen items (toaster, measuring cups/spoons, etc.) at Kmart. Haven't checked Briscoes yet but it's on the list.

Any other advice on where we can go/look?

Also, if anyone is selling items such as a TV, TV stand, dehumidifier, etc. or parting with kitchenware (pots/pans/utensils), bedding, etc. please let me know! :)

Freezing in Welly

Hi everyone!!

I just moved to Wellington from a tropical island, and the weather has been a bit of a shock. 😂 I'm used to rain (it rains about 90% of the time back home), but I'm definitely not used to winds this strong or such a cold climate. The coldest it gets where I'm from is around 23°C, so this has been quite the adjustment.

Does anyone have recommendations for good-quality but affordable brands or stores for winter-clothing? Specifically I'm looking for things like thermal base layers, Heattech-type clothing, thermal socks, or anything else that makes a big difference in the cold. (Note: I'm not familiar with the names of the winter clothing here, so apologies if I'm using unfamiliar terms.)

Today was my first time experiencing the rain here too, so recommendations for windbreakers/rain coats, would be helpful too.

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions! Thank you so much!!

Brooklyn School? (Experiences)

Hi everyone! We are new to Wellington and are looking at primary schools for our child.

Right now one of the rentals we’re considering is in Brooklyn so Brooklyn School is an option. Are there any parents on here with kids currently at Brooklyn who can share their experience? How would you describe the diversity of the school community?

Note: I know asking about diversity can sometimes be taken the wrong way, but it’s genuinely just something that’s important to us because our child would be considered a minority here and has also always gone to schools with kids from lots of different cultural backgrounds (which has been a really positive experience).

We were originally hoping to enroll him at Te Aro or Thorndon after hearing so many positive things from parents, but since we’re looking at rentals in Brooklyn, we’d love to hear what families think of Brooklyn School!
