Physical Therapy Recommendations

Hi everyone, I fractured both my wrist and my ankle a couple weeks ago. I’m still at least 6 weeks out or so from being ready for PT, but I’m curious if anyone on here has recommendations in the North Shore area? I fractured my talus bone in my ankle, which I keep being told is a bad bone to break and a very long and slow recovery with not so fabulous outcomes. I did have surgery on 7/1 to repair that fracture and I would love to find someone with experience dealing with this injury specifically!

Im a very active person (running, walking 2+ miles a day, weight training 3x/week, horse back riding, and Im on my feet all day at work). Im hoping to get back to all these activities. Ive done PT before but never for such a significant injury, I’d love to find someone who works with younger athletic people and has an emphasis on helping them return to their baseline activities.

Pain Medication

Out if curiosity, how many days worth of oxycodone did you all get? They only gave me 3 days worth but said to expect the pain to be pretty bad over the next week. Of course I can take Tylenol and Motrin, but I was really surprised to only get a few days of the oxy. The block hasn’t worn off yet so I’m nervous to see how bad it will be 😬 I fractured my talus on 6/21 and honestly have had very little pain so I’m not looking forward to it.

Edit:

Thank you for the advice everyone! Day one was tough, I tried to stay ahead of the pain and was taking my meds consistently before the block wore off but it was still really uncomfortable. Day two has not been as bad, I’m getting by with just Motrin and Tylenol for now. Obviously I’m not through it yet but I have to say the pain was not as bad as I feared. I was able to manage it with the meds, ice, and distracting myself with games and tv shows. To anyone reading this in anticipation of your surgery, the only way out is through, you got this! 💗

BCBS Delaying CT Scan for Broken Ankle

This is more of a rant than anything but if anyone has any ideas of how I can expedite things please let me know. I fractured my ankle Sunday, the ER doctor did not see the fracture in the xray but told me to follow up with ortho. Ortho confirmed a fracture in the talus bone that may or may not need surgery depending on the CT results. They wanted me to get it today or tomorrow, they put it in as stat. But of course BCBS thinks they know better than the foot and ankle specialists and are delaying the CT until their doctors “review my chart”. Is there any hope in making things go faster?

I’m afraid the delay will cause complications as I may need to go in a cast if I don’t get surgery. The doctor mentioned this bone in particular has poor blood flow and is at greater risk for complications like avascular necrosis. It’s already going to be a long and difficult recovery it’s obnoxious that they feel the need to draw it out even longer.

Showing Disaster

I’m feeling very defeated. I brought my 7 year old ISH to our first show together today. It’s not his first show ever, he competed a bit with his previous owner and did well. Ive owned him for a year and it’s overall been rough, he had EPM and needed treatment twice. He’s been an overall good boy though, he occasionally has some goofball moments but nothing I couldn’t ride through.

He regularly gets ridden by my trainer, I take lessons weekly, he’s very much in a program and has been going well. He’s trailered out a ton, we’ve gone to clinics and cross country schooling without issue. I took him to our first schooling show today feeling pretty prepared and we barely even made it into the warmup. He was fine when I got on him at the trailer but once he saw the warm up he just lost it. He reared, spun, and started bucking. I fell and my ankle is possibly fractured , at the very least a bad sprain.

He’s usually a very low energy, more of a kick ride type. I cannot emphasize enough how much I was not expecting that kind of behavior. I don’t know that I can ever trust him again knowing he’s capable of that. I know they all are but it’s just so jarring. I work a physical job so now I’m going to be out of work for who knows how long. My trainer thinks it’s workable but I don’t know, I’m curious to hear if anyone has successfully dealt with an issue like this?
