Aggregating small/short game experiences

Hey All,

Relatively new to 18xx but have some distant experience with 1889. While I enjoy long, large player-count games, realistically don't have a ton of time. I do have some older kids who enjoy boardgaming though, and obviously am able/happy to spend time with them... SO...

I would like to try to pick out a few 18xxs that would be ideal for 3-4p, 3hr or less, that we could play together. The goal of which games to pick, though, would be that they'd be varied enough in experience that, if I ever were to sit down at a high player count/long runtime 18xx game , I'd be decently prepared on my first go to be competitive.

I think I've narrowed it down to 1882, 1846, and maybe 1849. 82 consensus seems to be it has a lot of replayability and is basically a scaled down 1830 with some extra gimmicks. 49 similar but different kinds of things are scarce. 46 more ops centric.

Thoughts on this? Can you think of a better combo that would prepare someone for a game of 1817 etc? Was looking at 62 but it seems to change a lot about the system so while fun idk if it really would make sense, for example. Also unclear on BGG how long 62 really runs for.

Really curious to see what you guys think!
