Is LeBron James' 2026 free agency sweepstakes being overblown by Rich Paul?

After LeBron and the Lakers decided to mutually part ways, another "Decision" of where his next team will be is coming, so much that his agent, Rich Paul, made the claim 27 NBA teams have strong interest in him. Is that statement completely overblown considering The King is now 42 years old?

3-Team Deal: LeBron to MIA, Kessler and Wiggins to LAL, Herro to UTA Post Body:

The Trade

Miami Heat Receive:

LeBron James ($59.5M via Sign-and-Trade)

Los Angeles Lakers Receive:

Andrew Wiggins ($30.1M)

Walker Kessler ($14.6M via Sign-and-Trade)

Utah Jazz Receive:

Tyler Herro ($33.0M)

Draft compensation from LA/Miami would need to be attached to incentivize Utah.

Salary Matching & Logic

Miami Heat: Outgoing salary totals $63.1M (Herro's $33.0M + Wiggins' $30.1M), which successfully absorbs LeBron's $59.5M contract. They clear depth to bring LeBron back to South Beach.

Lakers: Instead of losing LeBron's $59.5M cap hold for nothing, they execute a sign-and-trade to bring back $44.7M in incoming salary.

This gives them a championship-experienced defensive wing in Wiggins to slide into the forward rotation and a young defensive anchor in Kessler to fortify the paint.

Utah Jazz: They send out Walker Kessler on a $14.6M sign-and-trade and absorb Tyler Herro's $33.0M contract. They use their cap space to take on Herro as a dynamic scoring threat for their backcourt while extracting draft capital for facilitating the deal.

Trade Scenario: Celtics move Jaylen Brown to the Lakers

Lakers receive:

Jaylen Brown

Celtics receive:

Austin Reaves (4 years, $185M)

Dalton Knecht

Jared Vanderbilt

1st-round pick

2033 pick swap

With Tatum set to make $58.5M and Brown $57.1M in 2026-27, Boston could have over $115M tied up in two players alone. If the Celtics decide the second apron is too restrictive, Brown is realistically the only contract that could bring back meaningful assets while reshaping the roster.

The centerpiece is Reaves' new 4-year, $185M contract. While he's nowhere near Brown's level as a player, Boston would be getting a 27-year-old playmaker at a lower annual cost, plus a recent first-round pick in Knecht, a young prospect in Thiero, and future draft compensation.

For the Lakers, this is simple: you turn a very good player into a proven All-NBA caliber two-way wing. Brown is the type of player every team with championship aspirations is looking for. Pairing him with Luka gives the Lakers a legitimate star duo entering their primes.

The question isn't whether Brown is better than Reaves. He clearly is.

The question is whether Boston values the financial flexibility, young talent, and draft assets enough to move off the remaining years of Brown's supermax.

Lakers should Trade AR for Trey Murphy immediately

I'm all for the Lakers making this trade.

Austin Reaves is a very good player, but if he's looking for $200M+ on his next contract, the Lakers should move him now and get ahead of the situation.

Trey Murphy is the better fit next to Luka. He's bigger, longer, more athletic, a much better defender, and one of the league's better three-point shooters. He doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective, which is exactly the type of player you want playing alongside a ball-dominant superstar.

The contract situation makes it even more appealing. Murphy is already locked in at approximately $27M, $29M, and $31M over the next three seasons, while Reaves is headed toward unrestricted free agency and a potential $200M+ payday.

My proposal:

Lakers receive:

Trey Murphy III

Pelicans receive:

Austin Reaves

Dalton Knecht

Future 1st-round pick

For me, this isn't about whether Reaves is a good player. It's about roster construction. I'd rather have Murphy's elite wing defense, athleticism, and team-friendly contract than commit over $200M to Reaves.

A Luka-Trey Murphy pairing makes more sense both on the court and financially. The Lakers need more size, length, athleticism, and perimeter defense. Murphy checks every one of those boxes while still providing excellent floor spacing.

If Rob Pelinka can make this deal happen, he should pull the trigger.
