It was her big break – and theirs as well, in that the group reached its highest ratings with Cruz as their vocalist. (Marceles 2004), Cuban music was becoming increasingly popular throughout the world. This was largely enabled by the continued growth of radio on the island. Cuba had 145 radio stations by 1958. Places to dance and listen to live music abounded in La Habana as well; tourists flocked to the city’s famous nightclubs and cabarets.
