Aloes for extreme summer heat

Hello All,

I’m very well versed in plants . After all, I did study plant biology but being that I grew up in south eastern United States and lived there my entire life. I only have experience in tropical and subtropical plants. Including some succulent and cacti plants. I recently moved to Palm Springs, CA. Where there is no humidity but extreme summer heat. With a high UV rays. However, winters are lovely with highs being in mid 70s and 80s and never freezing. After being here for now 2 years I’ve struggled with plants. I realized that everything that I could grow in a tropical climate I can’t grow here. Even full sun topics crisp up here. I’ve noticed that the landscape here revolves around the same plants over and over mostly being cacti and forms of agave’s, which seem to do fine however, I have noticed that the aloe vera grows very well here and it also grew very well and southeast United States year-round in my previous location however it does respond different here back in the east I can leave it out year-round and it would always be green and here in Palm Springs, California it turns to stress and turn into a nice blush pink color in the summer months and turn more into a regular green color in the winter. That being said, I’m trying to get into growing different aloes and was wondering if anybody knew of some good aloe species that can handle the heat here in Palm Springs, California. I am a collector by heart and collected many plants back in southeast United States and I’m trying to get more into collecting here, but my knowledge is not that extensive of succulent and cacti plants. I have spent lots of money trying varieties that end up just melting or burning in the summer heat. I have tried aloe blue elf, and the good old standard aloe vera that I brought from Florida so far I have noticed that those two aloes tend to do very well here and don’t burn. I also have an 2 foot tall aloe pearsonii that I brought with me and does wonderful here in full desert heat sun. Does anyone have any experience with other aloes that can handle fun sun? Or half day sun? My half sun spot is sunny from 1:30 pm to about 7pm . I’m open to any suggestions and recommendations!

Thanks!

Is this aloe vera salvageable? 🌱

I’m completely new to succulents and recently took in this aloe vera. It’s extremely sunburnt and I’m not sure if there’s any hope for it. 😭 Is it salvageable, and if so, what should I do to help it recover? Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Help with ID + care- agave

Hi all,

I have a care/repotting and identity question!

So I’ve had these since 2021. My plant app says both are Century Agaves but I wanted to confirm since they look like 2 different plants?

I got them from a neighbor and threw them in a pot outside (in Texas) and have never cared for them in any way except to bring inside in the winter. I never water, never feed, never do anything. They’ve just hung out happily, and eventually had pups that burst through the bottom of the pot.

Now I don’t know what to do. I’d like to repot and let them live their best lives, but after 5 years I worry it’ll shock them to death. They’re also SO spiky I risk injury handling the pot. Each winter, bringing them inside gets harder because of the spikes. I’m afraid I’ll poke out an eye.

Thoughts, ID confirmation, repotting advice, and any other recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Edited for typos

I am so sad. I have been trying to grow aloe for years. YEARS!

Years ago I had some aloe plants very small and helped a neighbor who had some bad Burns from a fire via his carburetor.... But those plants died when we moved.

Almost everyone I know who has plants has aloe and big beautiful aloes too!

I bought a big pot of aloe vera plants, maybe 20 of them in this pot. I couldn't give them away fast enough, and so many died. Then I was suddenly down to one. She lived! She grew! I bought her her own light!

But then I had Jade cuttings that I put in her pot and I guess I was overwatering them, they seemed very happy though but now she's nearly dead and after having babies too.

Can I revive her?

Agave Something or other out for a clean

Out for a clean and dust off, i think it needs a repot but i haven't been able to find a new pot yet the current one is 45cm!

Can any one identify the variety?

Just noticed these little aloes popping up

I think I cut off and tossed the mother plant because of aloe mite.

Aloe Conifera - one of the species with scent

The scent is not exactly fragrant but it's there and the bees like to come over

Last one for the day

Last one for today, it was a rescue and is a bit sad looking but will hopefully recover over the next year or two.

Again can any one tell me the subspecies please.
