One of the issues Barcelona must resolve in the coming weeks is Ter Stegen’s future. Hansi Flick does not have plans for him, as was the case last season, and the club’s sporting directorate must find a way out of this complex situation, whether by terminating the goalkeeper’s contract, loaning him out again, or seeking a transfer that will see him leave the club.
A few days ago, a door seemed to open with the appointment of Míchel as Ajax’s new manager. The manager had already tried to sign him last season for Girona and has now turned his attention to him as a potential signing for his new team. Goalkeeping is one of the positions that Ajax urgently needs to strengthen.
However, the deal will be far from straightforward. First of all, there is the player’s salary, which exceeds €15 million per season. This is a figure that is completely out of reach for the Dutch club, which, at best, could afford a sum similar to what Girona paid last season: €1 million. Therefore, prior negotiations between the parties would be necessary.
The logical approach would be for Barcelona to cover virtually the entirety of the goalkeeper’s wages in order to loan him out once again. However, the club prefers another solution to avoid having to constantly negotiate these terms with other clubs. The ideal option would be a permanent transfer, but this is where the second problem arises: the player’s fitness.
No one can say for certain how the German is faring after suffering one injury after another over the last two years. It is clear that no club will risk making a major investment in Ter Stegen, whether by paying a large transfer fee or covering his full salary. These concerns also exist at Ajax, who do not want to rush into signing a new goalkeeper.
